Stewarding Your Roles
“As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” - 1 Peter 4:10-11
Each year, usually in late August, I try to separate myself to fast, pray, and plan the upcoming year. I get away, not for a vacation, but to take time to map out a high-end view of our schedule for both the church and my family. I create a preaching calendar, schedule revivals and special services, and seek God for a “theme” to focus our attention for the year. The Bible tells us “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” - Proverbs 29:18
During this time, I cut off my phone and limit access to the internet and the outside world. I try to focus solely on the things of God. To begin this process, I take out a blank sheet of paper and list my God given roles and responsibilities: Christian, Husband, Father, Pastor, Son, Brother, Friend, Etc. Once each role is listed, I designate a color to them in my calendar. As I fill in the overview of my year, the colors remind me of areas that need attention, or perhaps those that are a heavy-handed. This simply helps me to steward my roles. I can see if the church is taking over my time with family. Even as a man of God, my first ministry is my family. It also allows me to see if I’m missing other opportunities somewhere else. Once I have my yearly overview, I go in each individual month and week as time goes on to add appointments and events accordingly.
Good stewards recognize their roles and responsibilities and do not wander around aimlessly without a sense of purpose and direction. They take their job as a manager of the mission seriously, understanding that they are going to have to give an account to God for how they managed His accounts. What are your God given roles? What are you doing to fulfill those responsibilities? Do you have a plan? Benjamin Franklin once said “if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” A goal without a plan is simply a wish.
“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?” – Luke 14:28
