At Pike Church, we challenge individualism in spirituality and worship. Biblical Christianity is not a solo project: It’s not "just me and Jesus." It can’t be. God has made the church — the fellowship of His people in Christ — central to His purposes on the earth.
But challenging an *individualistic* faith is not the same as denying the importance of a *personal* faith.
We champion a personal trust in Jesus Christ, who leads men from the isolation of individualism, into deep communion with their fellow redeemed sinners.
Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, Jesus makes us members in His Body: a community founded upon God’s grace alone; built upon the foundation of His cross — God’s pattern and provision for our salvation.
Somtimes, people will criticize contemporary “praise & worship” music for its perceived individualism: for how “me,” “me,” “me” can become the focus of the song, instead of a holy, holy, holy God.
If we were only counting words, maybe such critics would have point when it comes to “Amazing Love” by Charles Wesley.
Yes, each part in "Amazing Love" sings: "for me," "for me," "for me." But this, alone, is no evidence of individualism. Each part — each “me” — is skillfully arranged: woven to together, complementing one another; united into a song where each voice remains distinct, yet the beauty of each is enhanced, not diminished, by its relation to the others.
“Amazing Love” isn’t individualism. It’s an apt expression of personal Christian faith, and of the beauty of Christian community, which lives to proclaim the amazing love of God in Jesus Christ.
God is powerfully at work in the lives of individuals to bring salvation… of this, we have no doubt! And we are also confident that God’s saving work sets individuals free from their isolation; God carries them, rejoicing, into the fellowship of His New Covenant people, visible today in the local church… and at Pike Church.
Here, God is raising up a Body more wonderfully designed than Wesley's hymn… and He’s giving every sinner who turns to Christ a wonderful part to sing.
“Amazing love! And can it be... that Thou, my God, shoulds't die for *me*?”
