Read this week's Pastor's Ponderings entitled "Running with Jesus!"
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted." Hebrews 12:1-3
A number of weeks ago I shared with our congregation that I am a “few pounds” overweight and that I need to get into shape. One of my Good Shepherd friends encouraged me to start walking. He said that if I get up a little earlier in the morning it would be easier for me than trying to find some time after work, when I’m already tired. So far it’s working. I get up at 5:00 and walk for a few miles at a brisk pace. I pray. I meditate on the sermon text for the week. It’s been a good start to the day! Another Good friend at Good Shepherd has been checking in with me on how I’m doing with my weight loss. So far I’m down seven pounds! I’ve got a long way to go, but I am heading in the right direction.
Today God’s word encourages us to “lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely.” I need to lose a little weight to get healthier. What “weight” do you need to “lay aside” to grow stronger in your faith life? What bad habits and life patterns do you need to stop? Are you placing yourself in poor environments that are not good for your Christian walk? What good habits do you need to take on? Do you need to establish a more regular pattern for your prayer life? Would it be easier to start your day in the study of God’s word as opposed to “squeezing” in some time later in your busy day?
In our text, God’s word reminds us that we have a LONG faith journey in front of us. We are called to run with “endurance.” That implies that we will face challenges along the journey that we will need to endure! What is God allowing you to go through in your life that He has called you to “endure?”
The “Good News” is that Jesus has already “endured” the race for us. He went to the cross so that we would not have to! He finished the race for us and has given us the victory prize of eternal life! Today, even as we run our race of faith, Jesus runs with us! May God send you His Holy Spirit and give you the courage to “look to Jesus” and to keep your eye on the prize!
Running with Jesus,
Pastor Maske
