SERMON ECHOES IS BACK!!!
After taking a break for the summer, we are excited to reconvene together to discuss the newest sermon series. For the next 5 weeks, we are exploring the five main points of Calvinism, commonly referred to as TULIP. More importantly, we are exploring if and how today's understanding of these principles aligns with John Calvin's actual words.

Our first week focused on Total Depravity. Simply put, humans stink and are completely without conscience. It is easy to look around and see the brokenness of humanity. The headlines remind us every day that people hurt people.

The rub with starting at a place focusing on depravity is the natural tendency for that to color how we see each other - and even ourselves. We end up viewing the world through a lens of judgement rather than love. Instead of starting with the truth that we are made in the image of God, we only see the broken parts.

Calvin's belief was that sin has the ability to distort all that is good. It is pervasive and can infect every area of our lives - relationships, work, even our attempts to do good in the world. But Calvin doesn't leave it there. The answer to depravity - to sin - is God's grace. And there is nowhere that grace cannot go to fix what is broken.

This brought us so much hope in our discussion. We explored where grace is at work in our own lives and where we are challenged to lead with curiosity instead of judgement. We left inspired to be on the lookout for where and how God is working to draw each of us back to each other and back to God. God's love, faithfulness and grace is so much bigger than our brokenness. And that is good news.

There are countless churches where LGBTQIA+ people can find messages that do not affirm their full dignity and belonging.

But for those searching for a church where they won’t be rejected (or where welcome is not merely passive acceptance), those spaces are still far too few.

This is one of the reasons we celebrate Pride Sunday. It matters for churches like ours to make our welcome visible and intentional. We want people to know that God’s love is bigger than the barriers people have created, and that there is a place for them in the church.

Also, it was truly a fun and joyful service of worship!

People were invited to bring something creative or artistic as a way of sharing their gifts with the congregation, and our worship space was filled with beautiful expressions of love and celebration.

We had a 6’ tall painting, many fun decorations, a colorful pride stole, door wreaths, a miniature FPC pride float, handmade bracelets, pride pins, special liturgy, and a meaningful song during communion.

It was a beautiful reminder that the church is at its best when we celebrate the gifts, stories, and belovedness of all God’s children.

What a joy to worship together!
