“G-d doesn’t show you the destination - He shows you the direction.”

In this week’s Torah portion, G-d commands Avraham to “go”—to leave his land, his birthplace, and his father’s home for a place that G-d would later reveal. With absolute trust in the Almighty, Avraham set out, guided only by G-d’s direction. We each face this test in our own lives, sometimes daily: to take a step forward without knowing exactly where it will lead. When we move with trust in G-d’s plan, we begin to see His hand guiding our path and success unfolding along the way. Our faith-driven choices pave the road toward the very outcomes we seek—and, G-d willing, toward an even greater destination than we imagined.

“The rainbow appears after the storm - not instead of it.”

This week we read the Torah portion of Noach and the story of the great flood. After the arduous task of building the ark and enduring the long, stormy days and nights, Noach finally emerges with his family into a renewed world. G-d makes a promise — the world will never again be destroyed by floodwaters — and seals it with a magnificent sign: the rainbow.
It was only after the flood that the rainbow appeared; only after the storm that the colors shone so beautifully. The same is true in our lives — it is often through challenge and struggle that our deepest beauty and light are revealed. Without the storm, we would never see the rainbow.

“As the year ends, look inward; as it begins, look upward.”

This is the last Shabbat before Rosh Hashana — our final opportunity to reflect on where we stand, on our past, and on where we hope to grow. When Rosh Hashana begins, our focus shifts from reflection to action: attuned to G‑d, aligned with His will, and mindful of our purpose in life. These remaining days of reflection can make our actions in the coming year all the more powerful. Let us embrace this moment, and the opportunity for renewal that Rosh Hashana brings, creating a year that is truly sweet, meaningful, and filled with the fulfillment of our potential.

Please light Shabbat candles in memory of Chana bat Yehuda Leib before 6:37 pm in Elgin.
