IN FIDE, SPE ET CARITATE
In Faith, Hope, and Charity
Today I share the heart of my Episcopal Encyclical Letter, In Fide, Spe et Caritate, a reflection on what it means for us to remain faithfully Catholic while carrying the Gospel into the world today.
Our Catholic Faith is not something we invented, nor is it ours to reshape according to every passing age. It is a sacred inheritance received from Christ, entrusted to the Apostles, and handed down through the Church.
But preserving Tradition means more than preserving ceremonies, vestments, customs, or beautiful churches.
Apostolic succession carries with it an apostolic responsibility.
Christ must remain at the center of everything we do.
The altar is not a stage.
The priesthood is not a career.
The episcopacy is not a decoration.
Sacred Tradition is not theater.
The parish is not a social club.
And the Holy Eucharist is not an ordinary meal.
At the same time, fidelity to Tradition must never make the Church inaccessible to wounded people. There are many who have been away from the Church for months or years—people carrying grief, broken relationships, addiction, rejection, spiritual confusion, or simply the belief that they are no longer worthy to return.
The Church must go looking for them.
We cannot abandon truth in the name of love, but neither can we abandon love while claiming to defend truth. At the Cross, truth and charity meet perfectly. Christ reveals our wounds not simply to condemn us, but so that He may heal us.
This is at the heart of my episcopal motto:
SANATIO EX CARITATE CRUCIFIXI
Healing through the Charity of the Crucified Christ.
My prayer is that our clergy, families, missions, and faithful remain rooted in the Apostolic Faith, centered upon the Holy Eucharist, faithful to the Sacraments, committed to our Catholic Tradition, and unafraid to search for those who have wandered away.
And to anyone who believes they have been away too long:
Come home.
Do not wait until you believe yourself worthy. None of us comes to Christ because we have made ourselves worthy of Him.
We come because we need His grace.

IN FIDE, SPE ET CARITATE
Regresa a casa.
