Angels on Wheels Food Relief in El Paso Begins on Winter Solstice Day
On Friday December 21st , Angels on Wheels performed their inaugural prasad delivery service to the residents of the Opportunity Center Homeless Shelter on Myrtle Ave in downtown El Paso.
Project Director and cook Abhay, along with long-time El Paso Krishna patrons Madhi and Priya Nair, delivered and personally served almost 100 plates consisting of Kitchari (delicious traditional Indian bean and rice stew with vegetables) with a dollop of sour cream and splash of hot sauce, corn bread, cole slaw and Blueberry Halava (dessert made with sweetened, toasted farina).
Our fearless servers shared that it was a magical experience, serving holy prasad in a crowded basement with a group of gentlemen so down on their luck.
Priya shared that it was "a lot of fun", and expressed gratitude that she was able to participate in "such an act of Bhakti".
All meals were served at zero cost to the recipients as is the Angels on Wheels charter. The shelter supervisors were very pleased with the service and invited us to return.
It was also fortuitous that our very first delivery occurred on the Winter Solstice day as it is believed that whatever you do on this day sets a precedent for what you will achieve for the next six months.
Very special thanks goes to El Paso community member Cene Crabtree who not only cooked the corn bread for the shelter serve out, but also made the meal delivery for the homeless possible by donating the entire registrant fee from her recent Vegan Tamale cooking class at Whole Foods.
If you would be interested in coming along to help on our next serve out, or support the project with a donation of cash or ingredients, please contact Abhay at 720-238-2151.
