Heaven is full of cancer patients!

In this gospel reading, the Lord gave us the pyramid of priorities we should have in our life. It tells us that it’s not important to be psychically healthy, but spiritually healthy.

The Lord speaks to each one of us: be attentive to your spiritual health, to the purity of your heart and mind, rather than your physical health.
Don’t be afraid of the illness and pain of the body. It doesn’t matter. It’s not a problem. What matters is your heart, your mind, and your spiritual state. It’s the most important thing. The Lord set the pyramid of priorities. That’s why He asked: “which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’?” In other words, which is easier to receive: the forgiveness of sins or be healed of the sickness?

Receiving the forgiveness of sins is more difficult. Here comes the role of the mystery of confession in the Church, when you go to your spiritual father.
Don’t underestimate this thing. When you kneel before the holy icon confessing your sins, don’t underestimate it thinking it’s a formality thing. No… it’s the most important. Don’t underestimate when the priest lifts the epitrachelion placing it on your head and giving the absolution prayer.
And at the end, he says: “Depart in peace, have no further care for the sins which you have confessed. Depart in peace!” There’s no greater peace than the peace you receive at the end of confession. It’s the peace of Christ which no one can take from your heart.

That’s why the Lord said: “Which is easier: to go to the spiritual father and receive forgiveness of sins, or to go to the physician to be treated for your physical illness?”

Of course, you should go to the physician and seek the health of your body. However, the health of your soul comes first. We often don’t realize the illnesses of our modern times, including cancer. We consider it dramatic.

We see its sad reality, kids suffering on the bed of illness.
We are sad for the mothers, women, fathers, grandfathers, and elders in this illness.
We pray for them. And this is most important. However, we should know what’s behind this illness which God didn’t want. God doesn’t bring illness into our life. Illness is an intruder in our life. It entered after sin, and so did death. Illness and death are not created by God, they are intruders and a result of sin. So God didn’t create illness or death.

God’s love covers death and illness which came as a result of our disobedience and sinfulness. God’s love and divine providence cover them. Though we see the painful outside frame, God is working in the heart of those people, to sanctify them and prepare them for His kingdom. So Saint Paisios -the saint of our modern days- says that he saw the paradise full of cancer patients.

You see… in the earthly perspective: we don’t even dare say the word “cancer”, we say “that illness”. While St. Paisios says that paradise is full of cancer patients. The earthly perspective is very painful. But the heavenly one is joyful. “The paradise is full of cancer patients.” That’s it, my children. Don’t let death be an obstacle! Instead, behold the life to come in Jesus Christ who is resurrected from death.

Καλό και ευλογημένο Τριώδιο!

2025, the Triodion began on February 9th and concludes on April 19th.
"Triodion" comes from the Greek compound word ‘Τριώδιο’ (=τρια + ωδή), which means ‘three odes.’

The term ‘Triodion’ has a double definition. On one hand, ‘Triodion’ denotes the liturgical book of the Church, containing hymns with three odes that are chanted during the period before the Resurrection. On the other hand, ‘Triodion’ is also called the movable period of the ecclesiastical year, preparing us to celebrate the Holy Pascha. The beginning of the Triodion marks the start of a devout period, characterized by intense recollection and preparation of the faithful for the following forty-day fast.

The period of the Triodion, which includes the time of Great Lent, is a significant opportunity for reflection, forgiveness, and repentance. With these preparations, we can ready ourselves to experience the miracle of the Lord's Resurrection!

Χριστὸς Γεννᾶται! Δοξάσατε!

12 days of Christmas: Day 12 - Jan 5th
Martyrs Theopemptos and Theonas
Eve of Epiphany/Theophany

This was the era of Emperor Diocletian, who persecuted Christians. When Bishop Theopemptos was brought before the Emperor, he responded to the Emperor’s request to deny Christ by quoting Scripture - (Matt 10:28): “Fear not them who kill the body, who are unable to kill the soul." Then he added - do unto my body as you please. Diocletian sent his magician to trick and outdo the bishop...when Theonas saw that even poison would not hurt the Bishop, he converted to Christ! Theopemptos was then beheaded 298 A.D. Theonas was buried alive 298 A.D.

Saint Syncletike was from Alexandria in Egypt. She lived eighty-three years in virginity and asceticism and became the leader and teacher of many nuns. What Saint Anthony the Great was to men, she became to women: a model of mortification of the flesh, of patience in afflictions, and of wise instruction; for this, she is known as "Amma," a title corresponding to "Abba." Towards the end of her long life, she was stricken with an exceedingly painful disease, which she endured with faith and magnanimity. She reposed in the middle of the fourth century. It is said of Saint Syncletike that she was the virgin who hid Saint Athanasius from the Arians for more than a year in the environs of Alexandria, and it is to Saint Athanasius that her life is ascribed.

The 12 days of Christmas will officially conclude on Epiphany/ Feast of Lights.

Χριστὸς Γεννᾶται! Δοξάσατε!

12 days of Christmas: Day 11 - Jan 4th - Synaxis of the 70 Apostles
The Forefeast of Theophany, Day three

The Seventy Disciples and Apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ are those whom our Savior chose in addition to the Twelve and sent forth unto the work of preaching. The divine Apostle and Evangelist Luke describe the calling and the sending forth of the Seventy in his Holy Gospel (Luke 10:1-16). Over time, others were added to their number by the Holy Apostles, who, with the accompaniment and assistance of the Seventy, were preaching the Gospel of Christ in various lands. Although their number eventually exceeded seventy, they were all referred to as "of the Seventy" out of reverence for the number of Apostles that the Lord chose. This was similar to the Old Testament period in that Moses also had 70 elders that he appointed Exodus 18:21, 22; 24:1.

12 days of Christmas: Day 10 - Jan 3rd
Prophet Malachi & Saint Gordios
The Forefeast of Holy Theophany, Day Two

Malachi is the prophet who prophesied John the Baptist's coming and mission (Malachi 3:1). There was no prophet between Malachi and John. Malachi also prophesied about the dread of judgment against ungrateful Israel and against the lawless Hebrew priests.

St. Gordios the Martyr. Born in Caesarea of Cappadocia, he was a distinguished officer in the Roman Army during the reign of Emperor Licinius. In 314 A.D., the emperor went to war with Constantine the Great. Constantine showed evident sympathy to the Christians, and Licinius decided to treat the pagans with the prospect of moving them against his opponent one day. He expelled Christians from both the Court and the Army and ordered the closing and demolition of many churches, bringing hefty penalties against those who opposed him. St. Gordios went up to a mountain, devoted himself to prayer, study, and work, and eventually learned of the emperor’s persecution of Christians. One evening, he came to denounce the unjust use of power by the emperor and the persecution of religious freedom in the name of Christ. He was beheaded on the spot in the theater when all the dignitaries were present in 320 A.D.
