Lenten Devotional — Palm Sunday: The Humble King
Scripture: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!” — Luke 19:38
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week. As Jesus enters Jerusalem, crowds gather to welcome Him. They wave palm branches, shout praises, and celebrate what they believe is the arrival of their long-awaited king.
But Jesus does not enter the city on a war horse or surrounded by soldiers. Instead, He rides on a humble donkey. The crowd expects power and victory, yet Jesus comes in gentleness and peace.
Within days, the same city that shouted “Hosanna!” will echo with cries of “Crucify him!” The excitement of the moment will give way to fear, confusion, and rejection.
Palm Sunday reminds us how easy it is to praise Jesus when hope feels high and faith feels easy. Yet true discipleship means following Him not only in celebration, but also on the difficult road that leads to the cross.
The King we worship is not one who conquers through force, but one who conquers through sacrificial love.
This week, consider:
In what ways do you welcome Jesus when it is easy, but struggle to follow when it is costly?
How might you follow Christ more faithfully in both joy and suffering?
As Holy Week begins, we walk with Jesus toward the cross—trusting that even the path of suffering leads to the victory of resurrection.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, humble King, help me to follow You not only in moments of praise but also in moments of sacrifice. Give me a faithful heart as I walk with You through this Holy Week. Amen.
