Yesterdays What stands out to me is that Abraham named the place that before he ever knew how
God was going to provide. Abraham trusted the Provider before he could see the provision. The ram was already there, caught in the thicket, Abraham just couldn’t see it yet. Sometimes we can be standing in the middle of a situation wondering where God is and how He is going to work, when God has already gone before us. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our
heart and not lean on our own understanding. Abraham told Isaac, “God himself will provide the lamb” (Genesis 22:8), and ultimately that points us straight to Jesus, the Lamb of God who was provided as the sacrifice for us. Romans 8:32 says, “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” The ram took Isaac’s place, but Jesus took our place. Genesis 22 reminds us that God sees what we cannot see, knows what we cannot know, and provides what we cannot provide for ourselves. We may not understand what God is doing in the moment, but we can trust the One who already sees the other side.

To fully grasp the type of faith Abraham had, we have to go back to Genesis 22:5 where Abraham says to his servants: “Stay here with the donkey...we will come right back.” Read that again. “We will come right back.” Not “I will come back.” We.  Abraham didn’t know how God would do it. He didn’t have a roadmap or an explanation. But somewhere deep in his reasoning, the same reasoning the writer of Hebrews tells us about. Abraham concluded that God’s promise could not be canceled by death. If God had given him a son when his body was as good as dead, then God could bring that son back from the grave. So, when he told his servants, “we will come right back,” he wasn’t bluffing. He was speaking out of confidence in a God who gives life to the dead. That single word we shows he wasn’t walking up Moriah in despair. He was walking up in trust. Not because he understood the plan but because he trusted the Planner. He reasoned it through, and his conclusion was God is able. That’s what I want us to carry today: God is able. Able to bring life from death. Able to provide what no human resource can supply. Able to keep His promises even when the situation looks like the end of the story. You may be standing at your own Moriah right now. Starring at something that feels like loss, confusion, or an impossible situation. Faith doesn’t mean you understand the plan. Faith means you trust the Planner. When you truly trust God’s ability, it changes how you speak about your impossible situation. Then you can say, “We will come right back,” because you know the God who provides.

Abraham’s faith was tested in a manner many of us would’ve, like Jonah, turned and run the other way. To offer up your own child, which was an abominable deed done by many people in that day, had to be gut-wrenching after Abraham came to understand that God is love; unlike the many gods he and his family had once worshipped and the gods that many people around that time were actively worshipping. What did Abraham have trust in that made him realize he should trust God anyway? Abraham received divine blessings: 1. A promise that all nations would be blessed through his Offspring (alluding to Jesus Christ, Gal. 3:16), 2. Both a land (Gen. 15:18-21) and 3. a people numerous as the stars in the heavens (Gen. 15:5-6) dedicated to his future line when he currently had no descendants. What’s crazy is that Abraham got to see, to some extent, the blessings but didn’t see them fully developed. Just that glimpse of hope gave Abraham the faith to act when God told him to offer up his Son Issac after God had made promises to him. How much more should we be walking by faith since we have the Offspring fully revealed, who like Issac, who was an only Son (of promise), was laid on the wood as a sacrifice and was delivered from death on the third day around the region of Moriah? Praise God today for His promises being fulfilled through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Take time today to thank the LORD for the simple process of salvation through faith in Him.

As Abraham and Isaac made their way up the mountain, as the LORD had commanded them, Isaac
asked a very important question. Isaac asked Abraham, “Where is the lamb?” This is a good indication and a lesson for us that Abraham had been teaching Isaac to follow the LORD. This wasn’t
the first time they had gone to make sacrifices. How about you? Are you teaching your children,
grandchildren, the next generation about following the LORD? Do they know what the LORD
expects? Do they know the ways He has led you, provided for and protected you in the past? Do
they know His word? If we don’t teach the next generation, who will? A good indicator that we are
teaching our children well is that they know what is needed and what is missing when we worship the
LORD. It’s never too late to start teaching them.

Take time today to thank the LORD for our children and their faith.
