For it is a certain truth, (although little understood in the world) that Christian zeal is all love. It is nothing else. The love of God and [humanity] fills up its whole nature.
Yet it is not every degree of that love to which this appellation is given. There may be some love, a small degree of it, where there is no zeal. But it is, properly, love in a higher degree. It is fervent love. True Christian zeal is no other than the flame of love. This is the nature, the inmost essence, of it. ~ John Wesley (sermon, On Zeal)

For nearly 300 years, candidates for ordained ministry in the Methodist tradition are asked, among other things, these questions --

Are you going on to perfection?
Do you expect to be made perfect in love in this life?
Are you earnestly striving after it?

And they are expected to answer "yes," not because we are so good but because God is so great.

May it not be one of the consequences of this, that so many of you are a generation of triflers; triflers with God, with one another, and with your own souls? For, how few of you spend, from one week to another, a single hour in private prayer! How few have any thought of God in the general tenor of your conversation! Who of you is in any degree acquainted with the work of his Spirit, his supernatural work in the souls of men [and women]? Can you bear, unless now and then in a church, any talk of the Holy Ghost? Would you not take it for granted, if one began such a conversation, that it was either hypocrisy or enthusiasm?
