Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
The last several years have been record breaking for violence against gender nonconforming people. There are numerous serious political and legal threats facing transgender people right now. Hateful people are feeling more and more emboldened to act, and our trans and nonbinary siblings are absolutely feeling the culture shift.
Unitarian Universalism, as a faith, affirms and celebrates all forms of diversity. We respect that people know themselves best, and we encourage self-determination. We are called to support all people in their search for truth and meaning, and that includes trans and nonbinary people.
Today we mourn the lives lost to hateful violence, and we celebrate the resilience of those who are still standing. We pray for a day when violence and harassment is no longer an expectation for trans and nonbinary people's daily existence.
Today, UU President Rev. Sofía Betancourt, PhD joins faith leaders across traditions in releasing an interfaith statement proclaiming:
Transgender, intersex, and nonbinary people are holy, whole, and worthy of love and protection.
Together, we call out the misuse of religion to justify harm and lift up our shared moral responsibility to protect the dignity, safety, and sacred worth of all people.
