Do you panic inside when someone asks you what you are doing after graduation because you have no idea or your plans aren't working out?

Listen to the story of Gertrude Belle Elion (the first "Belle" discussed in the podcast below) who struggled to find a job with her chemistry degree in the 30's, eventually becoming a pickle acid tester. Through hard work and luck, she found an unpaid job at a pharmaceutical company and made the most of this opportunity to develop of countless drugs, including the first chemotherapy, drugs for malaria, organ transplantation, herpes, gout, meningitis, septicemia, urinary and respiratory tract infections, and AZT for AIDS. She is awarded the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with her colleague George Hitchings, becoming just the 10th woman and 9th person without a doctorate to receive the award. In 1991, she became the first woman inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

So if you find yourself exasperated and testing pickles, remember, this does not have to be the end of your story.

This episode features three unique women, all of whom are notable in their own way. The two things they have in common: They each have a surprising aspect to their stories, and they each have the name Belle.

“There are steps that might help. A pilot program at Stanford, for example, allows physicians to “bank” hours they spend mentoring others or serving on committees. Those hours can then be used as credits for child care, dry cleaning pickup, ready-made meals, housekeeping and handyman services.”

Female medical residents and physicians endure bias and a larger burden with home duties. They also face a greater risk of depression.

On this International Day of the Girl, let's take a moment to appreciate how far we've come in educating, empowering and supporting our fellow women in STEM. It's truly encouraging to see more and more female science majors at OC and to know that we are supporting each other in our endeavors and that we have such amazing mentors within the school to help us.

But let's also resolve to not stop here. We decided to pursue careers in science because someone at some point in our lives sat us down and told us that we are capable of doing science. So let's pay it forward: this year, let's encourage more girls and young women to explore the STEM fields. Let's show them that female engineers, biologists, doctors, chemists, physicists and computer scientists are not an anomaly, but the norm.

Since 2012, the United Nations marks 11 October as the ‘International Day of the Girl Child’. The day promotes girls' human rights, highlights gender inequalities that remain between girls and boys and addresses the various forms of discrimination and abuse suffered by girls around the world.
