Hey Oakdale!
I was standing by the entrance to the worship center one Sunday when a first-time guest walked in and said, "Wow, this is young!" He meant this was a church with a lot of young people, and he was right. We are blessed to be a church with a future, blessed with the energy of so many in their teens and twenties.
Church, we need to invest in and encourage and develop that generation. This Sunday we're highlighting our college ministry, led by Jay and Nancy Mack, along with other adult leaders like the Duvalls, Kochs and Jones. Rhys Tefertiller, one of our college students, will preach this Sunday, and other college students will lead and serve in both services. Then next Sunday, May 3, our youth group (led by Tucker and Elizabeth Sullivan) will be conducting worship for us.
We must be making space for this generation in church and letting them know how vital they are to the Kingdom.Let's be the church that launches this next generation towards great things for the Lord!
I heard a minister named Grant Skeldon share these ways to develop young leaders in your church. All of us have the opportunity to do one or more of these:
Notice and affirm a young person's gifts.
Give young people "ridiculous," huge responsibilities that require them to mature and step up.
Live by high standards in your church. Have high expectations.
Give hard but helpful feedback that actually can change a young person.
Make timely connections for young folks by introducing them to others who will be helpful in their careers.
Encourage their aspirations and help make those goals happen.
Let's feed and encouarage and speak life into our younger generations these next two Sundays!
