A church can make a profound impact by combining spiritual care, practical volunteer teams, and community outreach to ease the burdens carried by cancer patients and their families. Some ideas are: hosting a monthly support group; set up a structured meal train using digital sign-up tools; dedicate specific moments during August Sunday services to pray over individuals currently fighting cancer, their medical teams, and family caregivers; coordinate with area hospitals or regional cancer centers to host an on-site blood drive or a bone marrow registry event.

We celebrate today the memory of a group of seven monks of North Africa who were martyred during Christian persecutions in 484 AD. The seven members of the monastery of Gafsa, Tunisia, founded under Augustinian inspiration, were taken prisoners. They were the Abbot Liberatus, Deacon Boniface, Subdeacons Servus and Rusticus and the lay monks Rogatus, Septimus and Maximus. They were taken to Carthage where efforts were made, in vain, to have them renounce the faith. Then the authorities tried to burn them alive. When that failed, the martyrs were clubbed to death.

World Cancer Support Month 2026 is a reminder that patients need more than medicines, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or follow-up scans. They also need clear communication, emotional support, caregiver involvement, nutrition guidance, rehabilitation, pain and symptom management, and long-term survivorship care. When these needs are addressed together, cancer care becomes more patient-centered and complete.
