The 2026 Three-Day Chan Retreat led by Venerable Guo Goang at the New Jersey Chapter of Dharma Drum Mountain came to a perfect and joyful completion on May 25. We are deeply grateful to Venerable Guo Goang for giving us this precious gift before returning to Taiwan. Each day, Fashi stayed with us in the Chan Hall from around 9 a.m. until after 5 p.m., tirelessly and meticulously guiding us in practice. All the practitioners were filled with Dharma joy and gratitude.
In the past, due to my incorrect understanding, I did not realize the importance of Chan meditation. Whenever I crossed my legs, I only wanted to recite the Buddha’s name and had no interest in learning meditation practice. Naturally, I did not understand śamatha and vipaśyanā (calming and insight), nor had I learned Silent Illumination or huatou practice. Over the past few years, because Fashi has been residing in the monastic quarters at our center, I have had many opportunities to listen to Dharma teachings, which gradually corrected many of my mistaken views. I came to understand that with Chan practice, Buddha-recitation can be practiced more deeply and effectively; and through meditation, one gains greater strength to see the true nature of life.
Fashi taught us to anchor our mindfulness in the present moment by placing our attention on the nose tip area where the breath goes in and out, allowing the mind to settle and cultivating samatha, or calming. Throughout the three days, Fashi repeatedly emphasized the foundational importance of this method. Using the teaching of dependent origination and the links of contact, feeling, craving, and grasping within the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination, Fashi explained that only by continuously maintaining a stable and mindful mind, and by being clearly aware of our bodily, verbal, and mental actions, can we uphold the precepts with purity.
Again and again, Fashi encouraged us to keep practicing constantly and diligently. When the mind no longer chases after external conditions and ceases wandering everywhere, the mind returns home and reclaims its role as the master of the house. The afflictions and disturbances, like dust-like guests, will gradually be swept away. As the mind becomes more stable, its power of concentration and awareness naturally strengthens; and as concentration and awareness grow stronger, the mind becomes even more settled. In this way, calming and insight support one another and progress together continuously.
Deep gratitude to Fashi, to the Chan retreat coordinators, the timekeeper, the translation volunteers, the kitchen volunteers, and all the practitioners who participated. Because of everyone’s wholehearted support and participation, the retreat was truly harmonious and complete. We also look forward to the upcoming Buddha-name Recitation Retreat in June, where we will once again gather at the Dharma center and continue learning from Venerable Guo Guang together.
