Henry Cross was a well known 19th century stone carver who lived and worked in Brown county Indiana and provided carvings with a distinctive style and workmanship. Old Union is fortunate to have some examples of his work, one of which is shown. This is a monument to Zechariah Steenbarger, a 2 month old child, who was probably the grandson of the first settler in the area. This particular marker is made of sandstone, (thus it's unusual color) quarried from a creek bed on Mr. Cross' property. The motif is a stylized willow tree, most often symbolizing sadness or mourning.

It happened again. At about 6 am Tues 7-19 a pickup truck came thru our fence and knocked over several stones, one of which was broken. Early morning fog and a fresh chip & seal road surface probably contributed. A Ford Ranger is no match for big heavy rocks and this one was badly damaged if not totaled. No one was hurt, the driver has insurance and the driver for Copples wrecker service did a good job of extricating the truck without doing further damage.

Stonehuggers can repair and reset the monuments, Lucas Fencing can redo the fence, Tom can fill in the ruts and reseed and the purple clematis will regrow on its own.
