“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus calls us to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,” and it’s a lot like learning the game of golf. No one becomes skilled by accident, but through steady focus, practice, and putting first things first. Just as a golfer dedicates time to the fundamentals like grip and the swing, we grow spiritually by consistently choosing God as our priority. But when we keep Him first, everything else will fall into place, just like it does with practice and more practice. The more we seek Him, the more our lives can reflect His purpose and direction. Wish our golfers good luck today at the tournament.

“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you - even Jesus.”
Acts 3:19-20

We’re called on to turn back to God. Not to shame us, but because God wants to heal us, restore us, refresh us. We all know what it feels like to get off track. Repentance isn't just feeling bad about something we’ve done wrong, it's choosing to turn around and come home to God. And we do that, we find grace, forgiveness, and “times of refreshing.” Sometimes the fresh start we need begins with an honest prayer and one faithful step in a better direction.

“While the man held on to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon’s Colonnade. When Peter saw this, he said to them: ‘Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?’” Acts 3:11-12

When we've prayed for help, peace, guidance, have we ever been surprised when God provided? The crowd saw this man healed, and they could hardly believe it! Peter question why they were so surprised. God is still powerful, still kind, and still able to do more than people expect. We may not always know how God will answer, but we can trust that God is already at work!

"Then Peter said, 'Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.’ Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong.” Acts 3:6-7

Peter didn’t have money to give this man, but he didn’t let that stop him from helping. A lot of times we focus on what we don’t have or what we can’t offer. “I don’t have enough time.” “I don’t know what to say." “I can’t really make a difference.” But Peter simply offers what he has, and he trusted Jesus with the rest. And what's more, he reached out and helped this man up. That is so often where love becomes real, in offering the help we can.

"One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer - at three in the afternoon. Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts.” Acts 3:1-2

To have the name “Beautiful” this was probably one of the most impressive and ornate entrances to the temple. And yet just outside this beautiful and holy place sat a man who was struggling, and people were passing him by on all sides. Peter and John were on their way to pray, so it would have been easy for them to just keep on walking like everyone else. They had a holy task to do after all! Luckily, they understood what many of these “holy” people at the time didn’t: prayer and compassion were never meant to be separated. Sometimes the real test of our worship is how we treat people along the way. Today, let one interruption become a chance to show kindness instead of something you simply rush past.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ.” Philippians 4: 6-7

What causes you to have a sleepless night? Maybe it’s anxiety about tomorrow, worry about a teenager out late or at “senior week.?” Maybe it’s concern about money or other external situations. Often we cannot control what we worry about! What we can do, though, is give it to God. We are invited to pray and leave it all in His capable hands. He is ore than able, ready to hear us, calm our hearts, fill us with peace. So, do yourself a favor. Pray and leave your cares with God, and then get a good night’s sleep. You can always pick up your worries in the morning if you must!!

Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. Acts 2: 43

What fills you with awe these days? Is it a beautiful sunset, the laughter of a child, the beauty of a running horse, a graduation ceremony? Awe is one of those “feelings” that is hard to define yet it captures us when we might least expect it. The signs and wonders performed by the apostles kept the people engaged and focused on God! When our awe is followed by a reminder of the power and presence of God with us, our faith is confirmed over and over. Let yourself experience awe this week!

When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Luke 21:28

I was in my pond on Monday—even the pond needs weeding! But I wasn’t alone. I believe it was a Northern Water Snake that was watching me from under the lily pads. I had waders on so I wasn’t too worried about him, but I did keep an eye out for it. It reminded me of this scripture and that the key to redemption is looking up. In order to see your way out or to hold onto hope, you have to look up—Godward. Jesus is quoting Moses here, reminding his audience about the saving grace of God in the midst of the snakes. If you remember back in Exodus, the people were out in the wilderness and the venomous snakes were everywhere. God said, Look up and you will not die. You might still get bit but you will not die. Whatever keeps you in the dark, look Godward—in prayer, in worship….and God will answer you.

Hmmm….and take your eye off the snake!
