Deuteronomy 32:37-38, KJV: And he shall say, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted, Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? let them rise up and help you, and be your protection.
Israel’s worse moment is depicted by this question. Yet God will come to rescue and save his people (see Deuteronomy 32:39-43).

Deuteronomy 32:34, KJV: Is not this laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures?
Those who persecute Israel will one day be punished. This “vengeance” belongs to God and will take place.

Deuteronomy 32:30, KJV: How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?
A victory over Israel was not due to the enemy’s power but because God had abandoned Israel because of Israel’s sinfulness.

Deuteronomy 32:6, KJV: Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?
God’s people are careless to disobey him. The proper response to God is love and faithfulness.

Deuteronomy 31:27, KJV, For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death?
Despite the great leadership of Moses, the Israelites provoked the Lord’s anger by their failure to follow the Lord’s commandments. Moses knew that when he died, the people would become even more corrupt. (This verse is not rendered as a question in the New International Version.)

Deuteronomy 31:17, KJV: Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us? And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.
God told Moses that a time would come when the Israelites would forsake their faith, turn to other gods, and fall victim to disaster.

Deuteronomy 30:11-13, KJV: For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off. It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?
What God requires is not hidden. One does not have to be in heaven or travel to some far corner of the earth to discover what he wants done. His word has been provided through his revelation and is always available to us (see Deuteronomy 30:14-20).

Deuteronomy 29:24, KJV: Even all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger?
If disaster comes upon the people, it will be because they disobeyed God.

Deuteronomy 20:5-8, KJV: And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it. And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it. And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? Let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her. And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart faint as well as his heart.
Certain concerns for home, family, and crops were recognized as valid reasons for military exemption. Also, faith rather than fear would be a primary motive for those who would go forth to fight.

Deuteronomy 18:21-22, KJV: And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
God promised to send a prophet to help the people know even more about what he was accomplishing. If the prophet proclaimed something that did not eventually take place, it was not a message from God.

Deuteronomy 12:30, KJV: Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? Even so will I do likewise.
The last sentence goes along with the Question. The NIV translates: “We will do the same.” The other nations were engaged in lifestyles detestable to God. The Israelites were warned not to participate in the religious activities of the other nations. When I read a verse like this one, I can’t but comment that if everyone was destroyed, how could you enquire about their gods? Also, why would you want to follow gods that failed to defend you? -- which was a common way of understanding the power of gods in that day and time.

Deuteronomy 11:29-30, KJV: And it shall come to pass, when the LORD thy God hath brought thee in unto the land whither thou goest to possess it, that thou shalt put the blessing upon mount Gerizim, and the curse upon mount Ebal. Are they not on the other side Jordan, by the way where the sun goeth down, in the land of the Canaanites, which dwell in the champaign over against Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh?
The question identifies the location of the two mountains. The purpose was to remind the Israelites of God’s blessing for obeying his laws and God’s curse for disobeying his laws. This was a very important reminder and required an elaborate proclamation. For more information, see Deuteronomy, chapters 8 and 27. The NIV does not translate verse 30 as a question.
