Your Good Deeds Won’t Save You

So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus. God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.”

—Ephesians 2:7–8

There will be good people in Hell. That’s a sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, when I say “good” people, I mean people who “think they are good by their own measuring stick and reject God’s definition of GOOD”. Those who trusted in their own human efforts, people who trusted in their own personal reality, people who trusted in the religious things they did. People who tried to earn with selfishly motivated deeds what couldn’t be earned with galaxies full of gold.

Jesus warned, “On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name’” (Matthew 7:22 NLT). If we updated the passage, the people might say, “Lord! Lord! We were baptized in Your name. We received communion in Your name.” But Jesus’ reply is the same: “I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws” (verse 23 NLT).

These are good people, if you let them tell it. They paid their taxes. They recycled and put the right trash in the right can and did their best not to damage the environment. They volunteered at soup kitchens and donated to food drives. They think they did everything “right”.

But they’re still not good enough. No one is. No amount of good deeds can erase our guilt before God. If they could, we would have something to boast about. Our salvation would be a do-it-yourself project. We could stand back and admire our spiritual handiwork. Eternal life would be something we earned.

Eternal life is possible ONLY because of God’s mercy and grace. He sent His Son to die in our place—not because we’re good people, but because He loves us, even though we’re helpless sinners. We are saved through faith in Christ, not through good works.

That’s not to say that good works play no role in a Christian’s life. True, they’re useless in our salvation. Isaiah 64:6 says, “When we display our righteous deeds (as payment for our own salvation), they are nothing but filthy rags”. After we’re saved through grace, however, our good deeds are purified by Jesus. They become evidence of His work in our lives. Good works show others that our faith is alive.

James wrote, “So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. Now, someone may argue, ‘Some people have faith; others have good deeds.’ But I say, ‘How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds’” (James 2:17–18 NLT).

Visited our friends at Pruitt Aiken Nursing Home, today Wednesday September 11th and we encouraged them in the Lord. We talked about the “Pre-eminence of God’s word over our feelings (of fear, perception of inability or unworthiness)” and read [John 17:17] which Jesus urges the Father to teach us the truth of His word.

We prayed for all those who desired prayer, we hugged necks, we visited rooms and sat with friends and discussed issues that were weighing on their hearts. Christ was glorified, we pointed all souls seeking encouragement to the power of God and lifted up Jesus’ sacrifice on Calvary.

Every line in scripture points to Christ who points to God the Father. Our work here today magnified our Lord and Savior. We spread love and the encouragement of God in Christ.

Just leaving Pruitt Aiken nursing home on August 14th, visiting our friends and encouraging them in the Lord.

Todays message centered on [John 4:4-39] the woman at the well and her powerful witness for the Lord in Samaria. The take away is start where you are, tell what you know and do what you can! We watched a video that depicted the interaction with Jesus and the woman at the well:

I deputized everyone present to be His witness in their area where they live and recreate. On their hall. In their room. They might not know what God has done for anybody else but you can tell your neighbor what God has done for YOU!

Sharing our reason for the work that we do. To share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to do the work that He has given for us to do!

Do you know Jesus? Does Jesus know you?

Men on a Mission had a great day today, (7/10) at Pruitt Nursing Home in Aiken, SC. We sang praises to God and learned about the importance of desiring spiritual gifts over the material things of this world from the text of 1 Kings through a Tony Evans sermon on Elijah and Elisha. As always we enjoyed ministering to our current friends and making new ones.

We thank God for their lives.

Men on a Mission ministered to the residents today (6/23) at PruittHealth in Aiken, SC. Providing clothing items, gospel tracts, MP3 players with sermons (courtesy of Charles Stanley’s InTouch Ministry) fellowship and an encouraging message with personal application from [Exodus 17:1-4] inspiring us to be appreciative and grateful when facing difficult circumstances and how we should instead apply our faith and hope toward God because of his many mighty and wonderful works!

We should cast our cares upon Him because He cares for us!

Men on a Mission, ministering to the community in Johnston, SC on Saturday June 22nd. We were praying for concerns, had support for those struggling with drug addiction, blessed those who needed clothing, we shared the gospel and provided meals and encouragement to anyone who desired it. Jesus was lifted up, God was glorified and the spiritual need of souls were ministered to.

We are thankful for the opportunity to operate as God’s hands and feet in the earth!
