HOLY WEEK’S services’ at St St. George's Orthodox Church - Edenton

The Maundy Thursday Vespers on April 9th at 6pm focuses on Jesus’ last or Passover Supper with His Apostles, or Mystical Supper, as liturgically celebrated in His Church, and including the evening’s memorably repeated troparion—

“Of Thy Mystical Supper, O Son of God, accept me today as a communicant; for I will not speak of Thy mystery to Thine enemies, neither like Judas will I give Thee a kiss; but like the thief will I confess thee: Remember me, O Lord, in Thy Kingdom! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!”

Friday afternoon April 10th at 3:00 p.m. Vespers on Good contemplates Christ’s body hanging on the Cross and being taken down and laid in the tomb.

Friday evening 7:00 p.m. Matins on April 10th, including its outdoor procession, contemplates Christ in the tomb, His descent to & harrowing of hell and His raising up of the righteous dead there to life, and the quaking of the created heavens & earth.

Saturday April 11th 12:00 noon Vesperal Liturgy, with its Old Testament canticles, glorifies God for all His works from the Creation to the Exodus to the Crucifixion and the destroying of death.

Saturday evening April 11th at 11:30 p.m. we will sing the Great & Holy Paschal services, for the Resurrection of our Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ: Nocturn (the midnight office, with its Canon), Matins (with its outdoor procession, the Paschal Canon, and the homily by St. John Chrysostom), the Paschal Hours’ Prayers, and the Paschal Divine Liturgy of St. John; followed about 2:50 a.m. by the Paschal feast itself, in the adjoining parish hall.

It is customary on arrival at the Paschal services to bring a basket with items from which we’ve been fasting through Lent, that is, meat & eggs & dairy products; following the services, around 2:50 a.m. Sunday morning April 12th, Fr. Andrew will give the traditional blessing over the baskets, after which we’ll all sit down together for the customary Paschal Feast.

Sunday April 12th at 12:00 noon (there being no late‑morning service that day) we will serve the Paschal Vespers, concluding before 1:00 p.m.

As at all of our services and occasions, visitors are always invited and welcome.

St Emelia's homeschool co-op has been active and exciting! This past Thursday local talented artist and heraldic painter Ian Lowry was kind enough to visit and participate in the program for the day.
Ian, described as the "John Ruskin of the Albemarle", spent time explaining his work, methods, and style with the participants and each had guided lessons to try their own hand at art.

It is such a blessing to our community and our fellowship to have the mother's of the church coordinate the co-op and have such local talent participate.

Though the cold temperatures had put a seasonal halt on exterior renovations to the siding- much has been happening inside of the Historic St George’s building.

After lengthy and painstaking deliberation, the council of St George’s, working with local historic covenants and preservation guidance, was able to deaccession and donate extra unused 19th century and early 20th century pews which we received with the building.

Instead of the pews being disassembled, repurposed, or given to unknown donation source, they were donated to another ongoing historic church renovation project a few streets over from our current building- The Kadesh Church project.

The small active congregation was in need of pews for their large state grant restoration project which is coming to an end.

We are grateful to the Edenton Historical Commission, James Dawson Tyler and Down East Preservation (among many others) for allowing St George's to participate and assist in another ongoing Church restoration project underway in Historic Edenton
