HOLY WEEK’S services’ at St St. George's Orthodox Church - Edenton
The Maundy Thursday Vespers on April 9th at 6pm focuses on Jesus’ last or Passover Supper with His Apostles, or Mystical Supper, as liturgically celebrated in His Church, and including the evening’s memorably repeated troparion—
“Of Thy Mystical Supper, O Son of God, accept me today as a communicant; for I will not speak of Thy mystery to Thine enemies, neither like Judas will I give Thee a kiss; but like the thief will I confess thee: Remember me, O Lord, in Thy Kingdom! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!”
Friday afternoon April 10th at 3:00 p.m. Vespers on Good contemplates Christ’s body hanging on the Cross and being taken down and laid in the tomb.
Friday evening 7:00 p.m. Matins on April 10th, including its outdoor procession, contemplates Christ in the tomb, His descent to & harrowing of hell and His raising up of the righteous dead there to life, and the quaking of the created heavens & earth.
Saturday April 11th 12:00 noon Vesperal Liturgy, with its Old Testament canticles, glorifies God for all His works from the Creation to the Exodus to the Crucifixion and the destroying of death.
Saturday evening April 11th at 11:30 p.m. we will sing the Great & Holy Paschal services, for the Resurrection of our Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ: Nocturn (the midnight office, with its Canon), Matins (with its outdoor procession, the Paschal Canon, and the homily by St. John Chrysostom), the Paschal Hours’ Prayers, and the Paschal Divine Liturgy of St. John; followed about 2:50 a.m. by the Paschal feast itself, in the adjoining parish hall.
It is customary on arrival at the Paschal services to bring a basket with items from which we’ve been fasting through Lent, that is, meat & eggs & dairy products; following the services, around 2:50 a.m. Sunday morning April 12th, Fr. Andrew will give the traditional blessing over the baskets, after which we’ll all sit down together for the customary Paschal Feast.
Sunday April 12th at 12:00 noon (there being no late‑morning service that day) we will serve the Paschal Vespers, concluding before 1:00 p.m.
As at all of our services and occasions, visitors are always invited and welcome.
