How Petitgrain (and Young Living) Changed Our Lives…

We were already familiar with how essential oils could help with life's everyday nuances—soothing a burn, calming an itch, or comforting a teething baby. But when a friend shared some research about Petitgrain in a social media group, we had no idea just how much Young Living and the power of oils were about to completely transform our lives!
Scott was born with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and has used a power wheelchair since he was three years old. If you’ve ever built a rubber-band guitar as a child, you have a perfect analogy for how his spasticity works. When you pluck the rubber band, it vibrates and builds tension. Imagine that happening in muscles all across your body, all day long, every single day. Scott’s spasticity is affected by many factors—including stress, illness, and especially the weather—and it can be incredibly intense and painful.

As a child, Scott’s spasticity was treated with numerous oral medications, Botox injections, physical and occupational therapies, and multiple surgeries—including a major spinal surgery. As an adult, oral medications continued to be his primary treatment, but many of them left him feeling "out of it" or not quite himself.

In 2007, his medical team suggested a baclofen pump. At the time, it sounded like a wonderful option. However, within six weeks of having the pump implanted in December 2008, a true nightmare began. He underwent three emergency surgeries in less than two weeks. In August 2009, doctors attached a new catheter to the pump, and for a while, things improved. Over time, though, the medication became less effective, requiring constantly increased doses to achieve the same relief.

Following standard medical protocol, the pump was replaced after five years in 2013. Unfortunately, more complications followed. In June 2015, just a few days after our second daughter was born, Scott began experiencing stroke-like symptoms. It turned out the pump was malfunctioning, causing simultaneous symptoms of both overdosing and underdosing. After a week-long hospital stay, his doctors began titrating the medication down, and the pump was finally completely emptied in November 2015.

Following the baclofen pump ordeal, Scott’s doctors found an oral medication that worked well for him to take as needed. For the most part, we thought it had very few side effects. That is, until we discovered Petitgrain.
For almost a month now, Scott has not taken **any** spasticity medication or over-the-counter pain relievers. He has been using **only** Petitgrain to manage his spasticity. It has been absolutely life-changing!

In just this short time, Petitgrain has:
* **Decreased** muscle fatigue and spasms.
* **Eliminated** all pain caused by spasms.
* **Made his speech** even more crisp and clear.
* **Increased** range of motion in both his arms and legs.
* **Decreased** urinary urgency and frequency.
* **Nearly eliminated** episodes of choking caused by GI issues that were exacerbated by spasticity.
* **Improved** skin quality and reduced skin breakdown.
* **Boosted** his mood, mental clarity, and overall health.

As his wife and full-time caregiver, witnessing the power of this oil has been incredible—especially after watching him endure the harsh side effects of pharmaceuticals for so many years. This oil is even improving our marriage! When you live together 24/7 in a cozy home, maintaining a good mood is key.
The benefits of Petitgrain have also extended to my own health, making caregiving much less stressful. I deal with carpal tunnel syndrome and Celiac disease, among other challenges.

For me, Petitgrain has:
* **Diminished** carpal tunnel flare-ups (I’ve been facing the need for surgery for years because it gets so severe).
* **Eased** early signs of neuropathy and leg pain.
* **Decreased** overall inflammation.
* **Managed Scott's spasticity so well that:**
* He can comfortably enjoy his coffee while I run errands, thanks to his decreased urinary urgency.
* Transferring him to and from his wheelchair is much easier.
* Getting him dressed and assisting with his bathroom needs is smoother.
* He drops items much less frequently.
* All of this means fewer interruptions while I am tending to our children, homeschooling, or managing household tasks.

Scott is no stranger to adventure, but the baclofen pump and years of heavy medication stripped away some of his freedom. As a child, he did therapeutic horseback riding. As a teenager and young adult, he was deeply active in martial arts—he is even a 2nd-degree black belt in Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, and Judo! He has gone water skiing on the lake and has even been rock climbing. As an ordained minister, he doesn't back down from a challenge, knowing that through Christ, he truly can do all things.

Now, as a husband of 15 years and a father to three active girls, we cannot wait to see the new adventures ahead of us, all made possible by this amazing oil.

Note: These last couple of photos are from the years I was on oral baclofen and had the baclofen pump. I am incredibly thankful that the Lord Jesus Christ has brought me out of that situation, and I am so grateful for my health and how wonderful I feel today.

The Reality of the Baclofen Pump: Counting the Cost of a 7-Year Nightmare

When you live with spastic cerebral palsy, “muscle tone” is a delicate balance. For years, my spasticity was intense, but it was also a tool—it gave me the underlying strength and tone I needed to manage my daily activities, transition, and maintain my independence.

In December 2008, hoping for relief, I agreed to have a baclofen pump implanted. It was presented as a great solution. Instead, it stripped away the very muscle tone that kept me moving, and it launched a seven-year medical nightmare that lasted until November 2015.

The complications started almost immediately. Within just six weeks of the initial implant, my body was thrown into a crisis. I had to endure three emergency surgeries in less than two weeks just to address the immediate fallout.

By August 2009, I was back on the operating table to have a new catheter attached to the pump. While we had a brief window of stability, the relief didn’t last. The medication became a moving target, requiring constantly increased doses just to achieve the same effects. Then came 2013, and following standard medical protocol, the entire pump had to be surgically replaced with a new one.
The tipping point came in June 2015, just days after our second daughter was born. The pump malfunctioned entirely, flooding my body with signs of both an overdose and underdose at the same time. The symptoms looked and felt exactly like a stroke. After a terrifying week-long hospital stay, we knew enough was enough. Doctors began the slow process of titrating the medication down, and in November 2015, the pump was finally completely emptied and removed.

Looking back from December 2008 to November 2015, that pump didn’t give me my life back—it took it over. It traded my functional muscle tone for a cycle of constant surgeries, malfunctions, and medical trauma.

I am incredibly thankful to the Lord Jesus Christ for bringing me out of that dark season. Today, I am grateful for my health, my strength, and the fact that I am finally back in control of my own body.

When people doubt my strength, I look back at these photos and remember exactly what I am capable of.
Included here is a picture of me holding my katana, alongside a piece of the very board I broke during my first-degree black belt test. Behind it, you can read the inscription from that unforgettable milestone: “June 1-2001. Congratulations to a super young man. – S. S. Stroud.”
Through years of dedication, adaptation, and training—both in the wheelchair and in the swimming pool—

I am incredibly proud of the ranks I have earned:
2nd Degree Black Belt in Hakkoryu Jiu-Jitsu
2nd Degree Black Belt in Sh*to-Ryu Karate
1st Degree Black Belt in Kodokan Judo

Much of this training took place at my home dojo, Stroud’s School of Martial Arts in Kinston, Eastern North Carolina, under the guidance of Hanshi Lemuel “Doc” Stroud and Hanshi Richy Smith Huneycutt. I also standardly practiced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Mixed Martial Arts) to round out my skills.
Looking at the final photos, I am reminded of a different time in my life.

Those pictures show me back when I was on Baclofen and living with a Baclofen pump. Today, I am profoundly grateful to the Lord Jesus Christ for bringing me through that season.

At my current age, I am in much better shape than I was back then. Aside from taking Zyrtec, Singulair, and Vitamin D for standard allergies and nutrition, I no longer require any spasticity medication. My range of motion in both my arms and legs has drastically improved—honestly, I feel like I could step onto the mat right now and go three full rounds of grappling or sparring!

I am deeply thankful for my health, my strength, and how far I have come.

These verses continue to fuel my spirit and remind me where my true strength comes from:

Philippians 4:13
NKJV: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
NLT: "For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength."

Romans 8:11
NKJV: "But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you."
NLT: "The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you."

Psalm 18:34
NKJV: "He teaches my hands to make war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze."
NLT: "He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bow of bronze."

Psalm 144:1
NKJV: "Blessed be the Lord my Rock, Who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle."
NLT: "Praise the Lord, who is my rock. He trains my hands for war and gives my fingers skill for battle."

Proverbs 24:16
NKJV: "For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity."
NLT: "The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again. But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked."
