Matthew 18:3 ESV
“Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Children are wonderful and annoying. Jesus tells us to become like them. In what way? It’s important to note that children in Bible times were not spoiled and idolized the way they are today. Don’t get me wrong, children are a precious gift from God, but many parents today treat their children like royalty, waiting on them, pampering them and catering to their every need. In Bible times kids were to be looked after, not looked up to. They were to be seen and not heard, completely obedient to their parents, and respectful to their elders. In other words, children were humble. They were to recognize their inferior status and act accordingly. We are to do the same. God’s Word tells us to “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3 ESV) Children don’t worry, they trust their parents to take care of literally everything that matters in their lives. Our heavenly Father can be trusted to do the same. He’s displayed His perfect love for us by sending Jesus to take our punishment and earn our forgiveness. Rejoice in your lowly status, because Jesus promised, “Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:4 ESV)
