The Easton Shul

The Easton Shul Beth Avraham is a Modern Orthodox synagogue that combines traditional services with a very informal, easygoing atmosphere and small-town friendliness.

The congregation is growing, new people are joining -- come see what all the excitement is about! We regularly combine Ashkenazi and Sephardi minhagim, and our congregants come from every part of the globe. If you are Sephardi, Ashkenazi, Mizrachi, Bukharian, Syrian, or from any other tradition, and you want to lead a service according to your customs, we would be happy to have you! No one is ever made to feel unwelcome, and a position on the board is always reserved for a young congregant.

This past Shabbat, our kehilla came together for beautiful minyanim as we commemorated the first yahrtzeit of our Rabbi’s beloved mother, a"h.
The shul was filled with tefillah, unity, and warmth.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us. You helped make this Shabbat truly memorable and meaningful.

🎶 A Treasure of the Maghreb: Echad Mi Yodea in Judeo-Moroccan Arabic 🇲🇦✨

I am honored to share this rendition of "Kanedri Nedrihum", a unique adaptation of the popular Pesach pizmon, Echad Mi Yodea, in Judeo-Darija (Judeo-Moroccan Arabic). 🕍📖

This specific version is a bridge through history:

It is found on pages 159-160 of the maḥzor ספר מועדי ה׳ השלם (originally printed in 1856 in Livorno). 📜

A very similar version appears in the Avotenu Haggada (according to Moroccan Traditions) by R. Meir Eleazar Attiah.

What makes this version uniquely Moroccan? 🧐

According to the Open Siddur Project, there are fascinating linguistic markers in this text that identify it as a pre-Hilalian Maghrebi dialect:
1️⃣ The Number 2: It uses “zouz” instead of the standard Arabic “ithnan.”
2️⃣ Grammar: You can hear the present-tense indicative "kaa-" prefix.
3️⃣ Phonetics: The unique interchangeability of shin and sin (both pronounced /s/), and zayin and gimel (both pronounced /z/).

Preserving these melodies is preserving our story. May we all celebrate a Pésaj of freedom and deep connection to our roots! 🍷🌿

Our encounter with the creator and the world to come takes place in the physical endeavors too. Not just with the spiritual ones.
