Thank you to the Staples Academy Foundation and the Historical Society of Easton for raising a new marker and shining a light on how important Samuel Staples and his legacy of education truly are to our community. The dedication of the Pomeroy Historic Marker and the opening of the new gallery at Old Staples Academy were a wonderful celebration of Easton’s history. So proud of everyone who made this possible!

What a milestone! This week the Congregational Church of Easton was filled with family, friends, and fellowship as we celebrated Daisy Colonnese’s 100th birthday. After worship, everyone gathered in the hall for an afternoon of joy and warm conversation in honor of a truly remarkable woman.

State Senator Tony Hwang joined the celebration with a State of Connecticut General Assembly citation honoring Daisy, speaking to her strength of character and her many years of devoted volunteerism and steadfast service to the Easton community. We were also delighted to welcome Reverend Gerry Smith back for a visit, a wonderful reunion for so many who remember him fondly.

Happy 100th birthday, Daisy! We’re so grateful for your faith, dedication, and service, and even more grateful to celebrate this day with you.

“While we are zealously performing the duties of good citizens and soldiers, we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of religion. To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian.”

British adventurer and television presenter Bear Grylls has publicly shared his perspective on the nature of Jesus Christ, characterizing him as a "warrior."

In a statement discussing his faith, Grylls contrasted the common modern perception of Jesus as "meek and mild" with the biblical accounts of his life. He cited Jesus spending 40 days in the desert with nothing while facing temptation, as well as his willing submission to torture. Grylls concluded that these actions demonstrate strength rather than weakness.

Drawing a parallel for his audience, Grylls advised individuals to confront their own personal challenges directly rather than avoiding them. He encouraged people to stand tall and use their strength with "humility and kindness."

He summarized his philosophy by stating: "The world doesn’t need timid hearts. It needs lion spirits."

A beautiful day for a flag unfurling! Today, a Betsy Ross flag was proudly raised with the help of Joe Palmieri and his crew at the Easton Congregational Church Hall-the historic Staples Academy-as a visible reminder of our nation’s approaching 250th anniversary.
This flag design, traditionally associated with Betsy Ross, features thirteen stars arranged in a circle representing the original thirteen colonies united in a common cause. While historians continue to debate the exact origins of the design, the flag has become a powerful symbol of the American Revolution, independence, and the shared commitment to liberty that brought the colonies together.
As we prepare to commemorate America 250, it is especially fitting to see this historic emblem flying beside Staples Academy-a building erected in 1795, just a dozen years after the end of the Revolutionary War. Together, the flag and the Academy remind us of the generations who built our nation, invested in education, and worked to strengthen our communities.
We invite everyone to stop by, reflect on our shared heritage, and join us as we celebrate the stories, people, and ideals that continue to shape America today.
