Daugherty Street Church of Christ

Daugherty Street Church of Christ History of the Daugherty Street Church of Christ. The Daugherty St Church of Christ has over a century of history. E. Phillips. Elders were: Allen D. Dabney and H.

The Church of Christ is heir of the Restoration Movement, a 19th Century effort to reclaim the life and vitality of the church Jesus established in A.D. 33 in Jerusalem. Our message comes from God’s Word, the Bible, which is the sole source of our authority in all matters of organization, practice and teaching. We believe by following the New Testament as they did in the 1st Century we will become

what they were, simply New Testament Christians. It had its beginning in the early 1900’s as the first group of Christians began meeting in the Yellow Mound School house. Later, in 1913, they met in the Eastland County Courthouse. At that time there was not regular preacher or song leader but Allen D Dabney taught an adult Bible Class and called on others to lead singing and say prayers. From this group of 20 to 40 people grew plans for a permanent church building. While this building was being built the church met in the Alhambra Theater which was owned by one of the members. The new church building at 309 S Daugherty Street was completed in 1919. The first minister to serve the congregation was O. B. Horn. Deacons were: Joe Burkett, Tom Harrell and H. Lawrence. In the early 1950’s a building was purchased and moved to the property to serve as a classroom annex. In the early 1970’s a home was purchased for the minister and the class room annex was expanded. In 1986 a new auditorium and fellowship building were constructed. The old auditorium was renovated for Bible classes. Ministers serving the congregation over the years were: O. Phillips, W. H. Wrye, W. Moore, J. Bills, Bob Waller, A. F. Thruman, Orvil Filbeck, Claude C. Smith, Mac Bartee, R. Davis, Austin Varner, Otta Johnson, Gary Adams, Roy Gifford, Larry Marshall, Stuart Love, Flavil R Yeakley Sr., Bill Wheatley, Jim Howard, Jim Pennington, Audy Moore, Ernie Christie, Gary Montgomery and Benny Baker. Larry Robert is presently serving as minister.
