Peter’s Declaration about Jesus (Matthew 16:13-20)
Peter, like some eager student, was always raising his hand. When Jesus asked, “Who wants to be my disciple?” There was Peter [hand up]. When Jesus asked, “Who wants to walk on water?” There was Peter [hand up, waving]. When Jesus asked, “Who do you say that I am?” There was Peter [hand up, waving crazily]. “Oh, oh! I know! You are the Christ!”
It was Peter’s proudest moment. He was right there at the center of the circle, standing beside Jesus. But six verses later he is as far away from the circle as anyone can be. “Get behind me, Satan!” Jesus says, and you have to wonder: What happened?

THOUGHTS FOR THIS SUNDAY’S MESSAGE FROM PASTOR ED

"JESUS’ REWARDS PROGRAM"

Rewards (Matthew 10:40-42)
I believe God longs to bless us. I experience God as the giver of the best gifts, like eternal life. Does God reward us? I don't know. I don't have a theology of rewards. I don't have a vocabulary or a framework firmly in place for thinking and speaking on the subject. I may joke with friends and parishioners about earning stars on their heavenly chart, but the truth is I can't relate with a God who relates to us with treats. That's transactional, not relational.

But Jesus’ teachings literally say God will reward us. For fasting and praying, for compassion for the vulnerable, for bearing insults and exclusion, for loving our enemies, for generous giving. Compensation, it turns out, is a thing in the Gospels. For Matthew in particular, rewards are theological. So, does Jesus’ have a rewards program?

THOUGHTS FOR THIS SUNDAY’S MESSAGE FROM PASTOR ED:
“NOBODY DOES IT ALONE”
A Call to Radical Commitment (Matthew 10:24-39)
Mahatma Gandhi, a devout Hindu, was known to admire Jesus. Gandhi was once asked, "Though you quote Christ often, why do you reject becoming his follower?" Gandhi replied, "I don't reject your Christ. I love your Christ. It's just that so many of you Christians are so unlike your Christ." ,
With that powerful statement, we will begin to explore how the church, which is supposed to embody the dynamic, life-changing message of the Gospel, so very often switches allegiances to embody all the things that Jesus preached against.
