Happy Birthday St. Padre Pio

08/09/2024

From the Saints:

Let go of your plans. The first hour of your morning belongs to God. Tackle the day's work that He charges you with, and He will give you the power to accomplish it.

—St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross

God invites us to become his children. He calls us to set out on the way, to leave the self-containment of our desires and interests, in order to go out and meet him and adore him. God restores meaning to our life; he himself is ‘the way, and the truth, and the life’ (Jn 14:6).

—Jean-Charles Nault, O.S.B.

From the Saints:

I am not capable of doing big things, but I want to do everything, even the smallest things, for the greater glory of God.

—St. Dominic

From the Saints:

Those who say the Rosary daily and wear the Brown Scapular and who do a little more, will go straight to Heaven.

From the Saints:

Do not look forward in fear to the changes of life; rather look to them with full hope as they arise. God, whose very own you are, will deliver you from out of them.

REFLECT

An unlikely candidate for bishop, Saint Ambrose became the bishop of Milan following the popular acclamation of a crowd. “Ambrose, bishop!” they cried. He was also one of the great choirmasters of Catholic history, credited with introducing a type of antiphonal congregational singing and with authoring numerous hymns. One of those, “Veni, Redemptor gentium” is an Advent hymn still sung in churches today.
You may know it through the translation, “Savior of The Nations, Come.” My favorite verse is, “Not by human flesh and blood; / By the Spirit of our God / Was the Word of God made flesh, / Woman’s offspring, pure and fresh.” What a marvelous summary of the Incarnation, a beautiful little rhyme capturing the mysterious event that took place at the Annunciation!

PRAY

O Word of God made flesh, born of the Virgin Mary, who saves us from our sins, take up a place in our hearts and minds, that we may never be parted from you.

Amen.

LIVE

Find the Advent hymn “Savior of the Nations, Come.” Read its words or listen to a recording of the hymn being sung. Meditate on Saint Ambrose’s profound poetic theology.

Happy Feast of Saint Nicholas.

COLLECT PRAYER

Optional Memorial of St. Nicholas: We humbly implore your mercy, Lord: protect us in all dangers through the prayers of the Bishop Saint Nicholas, that the way of salvation may lie open before us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Amen

From the Saints:

Children, I beseech you to correct your hearts and thoughts, so that you may be pleasing to God.

- St. Nicholas of Myra -

The giver of every good and perfect gift has called upon us to mimic Gods giving, by grace, through faith, and this is not of ourselves.

- St. Nicholas of Myra -

Do your gift receiving skills need an upgrade? Saint Nicholas, a 4th century bishop is said to have placed gold coins in socks that were hanging on a clothesline so that a father would have dowry for his three daughters, giving us the tradition of Christmas stockings. Filling stockings requires planning to fill the toe, to protect the more fragile goodies, to make sure the smallest offerings do not get lost. Take some time to reflect on the gifts—the possessions, talents, skills and companions God has given you. What’s underused or unrecognized? When someone offers you help, do you accept the kindness or do you feel you are being judged as less than capable or underappreciated? Today’s gospel tells of Jesus feeding the crowd with a few loaves of bread and some fish. In God’s abundant mercy and love, we are called to be gracious in giving and receiving.

PRAY

Dear Jesus, grant me the grace to seek you ardently. Help me to find you in new ways in my life this Advent season. And then, once I have found you, give me the grace to be ever faithful to you. Amen.

LIVE

In imitation of Saint Nicholas, give a gift to someone in need. Perhaps drop off a few items at a local food pantry or homeless shelter.
