You may want to imagine us as sculptures that God is creating. He is shaping and chiseling and he’s eventually going to make us beautiful masterpieces. And he’s using a model for his work, as he chisels us into perfection.

Jesus is the model—he is the perfect representation of God.

Paul concludes this section with some of the most excited verses in the whole New Testament. He’s saying, “If this is true—if there is a light at the end of the tunnel; if you have an unseen translator advocating for you; if God is working in every circumstance to restore what you lost; and if you have proof that he is for you because he even gave up his Son—if all this is true, then what could possibly separate you from his love?”

The answer is, “Nothing!”

Not just because it’s nice or fun, but because it’s an extension of the close, intimate bond God already shares with his Son Jesus, and with us!

God will use all things – good and bad, happy and sad, even the things that make us mad. God uses all things for his purposes, to plant, build, and grow His kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven.

Sometimes it’s wonderful, and sometimes it feels really hard. But praise God that through Jesus, and through his church, the Gospel continues to spread!

“How am I supposed to understand my Bible when I don’t have a seminary degree or training in Greek and Hebrew?” This is a fair question. The first answer is that we have the Holy Spirit to help us, and most of what we read in the Bible is accessible and makes good sense. But some other things are helpful.

We need community, small groups, mentors, and others, to help us interpret what we read. It’s also a good idea to have a few go-to resources on hand, like commentaries, to help us make sense of the really challenging passages.

God has high standards for leadership among his people, the church. Because Jesus wants as many people as possible to hear his good news, find abundant life in him, and come together as his people to carry out his mission, he has safeguards about who can be in leadership in his church, and how that leadership has to function.

We love the Bible, and we want to do what the Bible teaches us to do, but we know that in many cases, there is an overarching principle and then there is a culturally appropriate form of what that principle looks like in practice. We call the process of determining how to interpret and apply these Scriptures, “Hermeneutics.”

We have to go up from the ground-level application in more and more abstract ways until we find the principle that carries over in every time, place, and culture, and apply it in culturally-fitting ways.

Paul doesn’t mean that all distinctions between men and women, or different races, or different socio-economic statuses are gone. We’re intended to be diverse in all these ways. But our status in his family, the church, doesn’t hinge on any of these markers. It hinges on being in Christ, on trusting in the one who saved by becoming weak, giving himself on the cross, to restore us to all that we were made to be but have never fully had. Our relationships are re-ordered according to what he has done.
