Announcement: New Editorial Leadership for The Spiritual Sword
The Spiritual Sword is pleased to announce that Allen Webster has been appointed as the new editor of the journal, following the passing of beloved longtime editor, Alan E. Highers.

Brother Highers not only guided The Spiritual Sword for thirty-five years with unwavering dedication to biblical truth and doctrinal soundness, but also took thoughtful steps to ensure a smooth transition for the future. He personally selected Brother Webster as his successor and prepared him for this role, confident that the journal would remain a trusted voice for Bible study and faithfulness to the Word.

In addition, Mike Hixson will serve as the Associate Editor. Mike works with the Spiritual Sword podcast and has a longtime connection to both Alan Highers and the Spiritual Sword. The Spiritual Sword is overseen by the elders of the East Ridge church of Christ in the greater Chattanooga, Tennessee area, who took the reins when the Getwell congregation in Memphis, Tennessee, ceased meeting in 2023.

Together, Webster and Hixson will carry forward the legacies of former editors Thomas B. Warren and Alan Highers. The mission of The Spiritual Sword remains unchanged: to use "the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Ephesians 6:17) to stand, teach, and defend the gospel of Christ.

October 5th-9th will be this year's Spiritual Sword lectureship at the East Ridge Church of Christ! We will be celebrating 50 years of this great lectureship.

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of our beloved Brother Alan Highers on August 27, 2025.

For 36 years, he faithfully served as the editor of the Spiritual Sword Journal, guiding generations of Christians with clarity, conviction, and a steadfast devotion to God’s Word. His unwavering stance for the truth and his love for the Lord have left a lasting mark on the brotherhood and its history in this generation.

From all who have read, taught, implemented, valued, and loved the Spiritual Sword under his capable guidance—our appreciation runs deep. His legacy of faith and dedication will continue to bless the church for years to come.

"Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Ephesians 6:17).

Brother Highers has laid down his sword, but the truth he defended continues on.
