An inter-faith, inter-philosophical dialogue, hosted by a family in the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America and inspired by the L’Abri (Shelter) Ministry of the philosopher/theologian, Francis Schaeffer. The Mars Hill House is currently looking for live-in students to participate in this boarding-house type lifestyle and engage in various in-house events as well as to develop relationshi
ps with campus organizations at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie-Mellon University, as well as with local seminaries such as the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. The Mars Hill House offers affordable rent at $400.00/mo and this includes all utilities, wireless internet, a supper-time meal plan, a fully furnished room, toiletries, and a twice daily carpool to campus. In-house events at the Mars Hill House include;
1. A weekly, casual, topical discussion of philosophical, religious, and socio-economic political issues that follows a group study of a certain philosophy work (i.e. The Dialogues of Hylas and Philonous by George Berkeley).
2. A weekly ‘apologetic’ bible study, which gives students the opportunity to engage with the beliefs and practices of the host family, as well as to discuss their own convictions and beliefs.
3. A bi-weekly formal debate amongst any two students moderated and viewed by the other students on points of disagreement on religious, philosophical, or socio-economic topics.
4. A bi-weekly (opposite the weeks of debate) movie night, consisting of ‘philosophically stimulating’ movies (ie. The Matrix, Children of Men, etc.) viewed together with a post-viewing discussion to follow.
