Today’s devotional: But unto you that fear My name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in His wings; and you shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall ― Malachi 4:2

We have a jelly-bean shaped lily pond in our yard. There is an area where the pond is 4 foot deep, and only about 1/2 to 1 foot along the periphery. In the fall, we often see Great Blue Herons spying out the pond, looking at our fish as their next tasty meal. They do not appear to be scared off by our heron decoy. No, they land near the pond and step into the water to catch a fish. Once, as I approached the pond, a heron flew off and I could see a slimy tail flapping next to his beak.

The average wingspan of an adult heron ranges from 65 - 79 inches (that’s 5.5 – 6.5 feet long)! When they fly overhead, I call them Pterodactyls because they look so enormous. Their wings will help them rise above the ground and fly in any direction with strength and ease…but no healing in their wings!

The Lord God Almighty heals!

Today’s devotional: Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might (Ecclesiastes 9:10)

This year, 43-year-old Anne Hathaway is upping her game as a movie actor. She will be starring in numerous movies playing totally dissimilar roles. In one film, she’s playing a Taylor-Swift/Lady Gaga type pop star going through a dark period. In another, she’s reprising the role of Andy Sachs in the ‘Devil Wears Prada.” And she’s playing Penelope in an epic fantasy action adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek classic, “The Odyssey.”

In the recent article in The New York Times, Anne shared her new approach to living her life:

“I used to be a very fear-based person,” Hathaway said. “I used to have an overcharged electric-fence protection system, and I’m not so interested in that anymore. Something happened when I turned 40 and I just realized I was living my life like it was a dress rehearsal,” she added, “and that actually, it was showtime.”

And I think she’s right. Every day is “showtime” when it comes to doing God’s work. We might not all be movie stars, but God has given us all roles to play in His world. Whatever work you have to do today, do it with all your might.

Today’s devotional: “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts through faith” (Colossians 3:15).

William C. Martin, in his book The Art of Pastoring, urges us to understand that God is working through us right now, in whatever we’re doing. This is in line with Jesus’ teaching that there aren’t two separate worlds, the spiritual and the material. They’re one world. Martin writes:

To be perfectly yourself while doing your work
is to do that work perfectly.
To notice fully what you are doing right now
is to be filled with God.

If we let God be a part of our everyday activities, we find that God is able to help us more and more. Martin says:

By being perfectly at ease with what is,
you will allow the Word to create
that which is not.

It’s worth a try.

Today’s devotional: You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water — Psalm 63:1

In mid-April, there were a few days where the outside temperature surpassed 90°F! It felt like summer. I worked in the garden and at 10 am, I was ready to put the gardening tools away and walk inside for the day. I was hot and sweaty! I was weary! I was thirsty! Although I was never physically in a desert, this verse in Psalm surely gives a description of my condition. Where’s a glass of cold water and an ice-pack for my neck?

Spiritually, nothing in this world can satisfy our longings. Money and possessions may fade and even disappear. Family and friends may fail, and one day they may be gone. However, our Lord is a constant in life. When we earnestly seek Him, He fills the longing of our heart. And, He never leaves nor forsakes us; even in difficult times, His presence and love will see us through!

Search and follow the Lord God Almighty with your whole being [heart]!

Today’s devotional: Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing (Thessalonians 5:11)

As I watched NASA’s live feed from Artemis II, one of the commentators noted how many people from around the world had been working for years to make this lunar mission possible. This global community of engineers, contractors, technicians, graphic artists, logistics specialists, software and hardware developers and others had come together as a community specifically for this purpose. Many of the people had not even been born when we last launched humans to the moon.

It is amazing what we humans can do when we bring our skills and talents together to do something worthwhile. The lunar mission reminds me of what a church can do when people come together to do something worthwhile.

As a church we might not launch each other into space, but we can do amazing things together that loves, serves and feeds God’s people physically and spiritually. Each person’s gifts and talents can be put to good use to serve God and the people around us. There’s no greater mission to accomplish that to do God’s work together.

Today’s devotional: “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34).

Our scripture contains an extraordinarily important piece of advice from Jesus, which I for one have to learn over and over: live one day at a time! Live in the moment!

Mike Brown, the head coach of the Knicks basketball team, was quoted recently in the New York Times as saying:

…the biggest thing is just trying to stay present, not getting ahead of yourself and however you can do that, try to do it. And the simplest way for me is just keep reminding myself, reminding people around me it’s one game at a time but it’s also one quarter, one possession at a time and trying to lock in on each possession like it’s your last.

One game at a time! One day at a time! One moment at a time! That’s Jesus’ advice to us, and not just for sports either.

Today’s devotional: Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all His benefits ― Psalm 103:2-5

There are numerous verses in the book of Psalm. The word “praise,” or a version of it (plural, past tense), appears 183 times! Praise through music is generally included in Sunday morning worship services. Some churches stick to 3 or 4 hymns dispersed throughout the service, while others will sing various hymns and songs for the first 20-30 minutes. Then, of course, additional music is sung by a choir.

Our prayers can also be a form of praise, especially when we bring to light the God-sightings or God-winks that we see in our daily lives.

There might be times when it is difficult to praise…when we are seriously ill, lose a loved one, experience a horrific event, etc. However, even in these difficult times we are to praise Him and “remember” His benefits…such as: the gift of His Son and the gift of His Spirit, His unending love, forgiveness of sin, life everlasting, a welcoming and supportive church, affirmations, seeing acts of kindness…and you may add to the list!

Just a few reasons to praise The Lord!

Today’s devotional: My times are in your hands (Psalm 31:15)

I was driving in the slow lane on Route 3 West behind a tractor-trailer. Suddenly, the tractor-trailer braked hard and came to an almost compete stop in the slow lane so that it could slowly navigate a turn to exit. Its trailer blocked my lane for quite a while.

As I sat there in the slow lane like a sitting duck, I looked in my rear-view mirror and saw car after car come up behind me way too fast for my liking before they zoomed into the middle lane to avoid hitting me. I held my breath and prayed to not be hit from behind.

As I was finishing my prayer, not one, not two, but three heavy dump trucks changed from my lane and zipped by me in the center lane. Each dump truck said on their back, “In God We Trust.”

Amen to that! Sometimes we need to reminded that we are always in the good hands of the Lord.

Today’s devotional:”Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6).

My next door neighbor is in a band. I hear them practicing in his basement now and then. My neighbor plays keyboards in the band. I saw him recently and told him I’d been listening to him and I thought he was really an excellent musician.

He was modest but pleased, and he said, “What I love to do is to listen for the spaces in the music and fill them.”

That’s what God calls on us to do in helping others. With the help of the Holy Spirit, God wants us to identify the places where people are “empty,” where they are in any kind of need. And God wants us to help fill those needs.

God wants to do the same for us, too.

Today’s devotional: Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set-up a pillar for himself, which is in the King’s Valley. For he said, “I have no son to keep my name in remembrance.” He called the pillar after his own name. And to this day it is called Absalom’s Monument ― II Samuel 18:18

WOW! If you know the anything about Absalom, from this one verse you can see he was a self-centered man! Absalom, a son of David with long flowing hair [2 Samuel 14:25-26], had to erect his own memorial (pillar).

Absalom was riding a mule after his army is defeated; he’s fleeing from King David [his father] and his hair gets caught in the branch of a tree and he is left there dangling. Ironically, this verse comes after his death. It’s a summation of his life…following after his own interests which centered around himself. NOT a great statement as an epitaph!

We do not have an earthly king to follow, for we serve the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! Good deeds and heroic actions done bring honor and praise to Him!
