This past Saturday the Presbytery of Northeast New Jersey co-hosted a basketball clinic & mental health and wellness discussion with the East Orange YMCA titled "Hoops & Healing". This event was strategically scheduled during "National Su***de Prevention Month", middle school and high school students from Essex County were invited. From 2007 to 2020, the su***de rate rose 144% among 10- to 17-year-olds who are Black. Although the overall youth su***de rate is trending downwards, this data raises alarms about the need to improve and address mental health care for Black communities. The time is now to start to have these conversations with youth about the importance of mental health and wellness.
On behalf of the Presbytery of Northeast NJ, we would like to thank Rev. Aaron Carr of The King Movement-North Jersey, Deacon Laverne Williams of Mental Health Association in New Jersey, Inc., Mr Ivan Tchatchouwo the CEO of The Zone (itsthezone.com), Members of the East Orange Fire Officers Local 223, the East Orange YMCA Interim Executive Director Leah Greene & the Youth Sports Director Jada MCzorn-Lewis.
