This past Saturday the Presbytery of Northeast New Jersey co-hosted a basketball clinic & mental health and wellness discussion with the East Orange YMCA titled "Hoops & Healing". This event was strategically scheduled during "National Su***de Prevention Month", middle school and high school students from Essex County were invited. From 2007 to 2020, the su***de rate rose 144% among 10- to 17-year-olds who are Black. Although the overall youth su***de rate is trending downwards, this data raises alarms about the need to improve and address mental health care for Black communities. The time is now to start to have these conversations with youth about the importance of mental health and wellness.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the Mental Health Association in New Jersey, Inc. for embracing me and helping me find a way to do my part in eliminating the stigma around mental illness. As Community Ministry Organizer for the Presbytery of Northeast NJ, I am grateful for the partnership that has developed over the past year. Today was such an amazing day! I brought two special people with me to speak with the young men in the 6th, 7th & 8th grade Benjamin Banneker Academy today. My first guest was none other than LJ! Back where it began for him as an elementary school student. LJ spoke about choosing high schools, what it’s like attending St. Benedict's Prep and being part of a brotherhood. I was moved to say the least.

Our second guest was none other than Apostle Keith Wilks Sr. , my Brother from The King Movement-North Jersey!! Apostle spoke about setting big goals and his journey to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise money for child hunger in Nairobi. God is great!! Can’t wait to get back!!

Whenever I work from home it's always a joy to hear the kids outside in the playground during the day. I'm grateful to Benjamin Banneker Academy for allowing us to come in and work with the young men there in the 6th thru 8th grade. I also love living in this community as well because I see them in the stores, on Central Ave or on Main Street. I'm consistent with who they see inside the school and outside the school. I always tell them that the streets are watching, you never know where I'm going to pull up on you at so you better be on point!!!!
