In 1928; James Brown was born in Macon, Georgia. He will become one of the most famous and influential R & B singer spanning over five decades.

In 1967; Six days of rioting end in Newark, New Jersey, in the worst urban violence since the Watts Riots of 1965.

In 1970; Kenneth Gibson is elected mayor of Newark, New Jersey. He is the first African-American to serve in the position and the first of a major eastern city.

In 1976 he will be elected the first African-American president of the United States Conference of Mayors.

“Black History”
In 1877; Henry O. Flipper, is born into slavery in Thomasville, Georgia. He will become the first African-American to graduate from West Point.

In 1921: Bessie Coleman, a 28-year old native of Atlanta, Texas, who learned French in order to communicate with instructors, receives a pilot’s certificate from the Federation Aeronautique International in France. She is the first black in the world to become a licensed pilot.
