While most of our students are on Spring Break this week, we would love to share about Campus Ministry during the first half of the semester!
First, while the university was still on winter break, 36 students attended the SEEK conference in Columbus, OH, along with 16,000 other young Catholics. The first weekend on campus included retreats for students participating in our Alternative Spring Break Program, reflecting on service, and student leaders, reflecting on values in community. Vocation directors from the Augustinians and the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT) spent evenings with us in January. They spent time with our Priesthood Discernment Group and played games with students before each said Mass. Upperclassmen also learned about Catholic Social Teaching at our January Senior Night.
Entering the month of February, 50 students spent a Friday evening singing praise in Eucharistic Adoration, and Bishop Boyea celebrated a Sunday Mass before enjoying some time conversing with students during a reception. Our Winter Retreat took place two weeks ago and students spent the weekend learning about the effects of sin in our lives and inviting Christ to heal their woundedness. We had a feast on Fat Tuesday with about 40 students coming for food and games. Ash Wednesday was a very full day at the student center with 3500 people attending Mass and an estimated 135 people participating in the sacrament of Reconciliation. It is always exciting to see students bringing their friends along to Mass on that day, including a lot of non-Catholics! We wrapped up that week with a visit from a Jesuit vocations director who our students enjoyed peppering with questions after an entertaining talk.
Now we have landed at the halfway point of the semester. Over 20 students are participating in our Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program this year with 2 groups down in Mississippi and a smaller group nearby in Flint. We look forward to hearing all about their service when they return!
Please pray for our college students this Lent and consider giving part of your tithe to this growing ministry!
