I Say Tomato, You Say Food Justice!

09/07/2026

🙏🏾 Creator God,

Help us to be your people, working for a world where all workers are valued. A world where those who clean houses are also able to buy houses to live in. A world where those who grow food can also afford to eat their fill. And one where those who serve and care for others – in stores, schools, hotels, restaurants, nursing homes, and many other places –are, themselves, also served and cared for. A world where all workers everywhere share in the abundance that you have given us.

-Rev. Seth Wispelwey
Minister for The UCC Economic Justice Movement

Pronouns can be tricky! Maybe it’s your first time using they/them to refer to a single person, or maybe a loved one is transitioning and wants to use a pronoun that affirms their gender identity—but is new to you. Whatever the case may be, there are lots of ways to learn, honor, and use someone’s pronouns. Here are a few to get your started:

• Try a role play with someone (who is NOT your LGBTQ+ loved one) to help you understand what it feels like to be misgendered.
• Write a story about your loved one using their affirmed name and pronouns.
• Make a gender jar and put $1.00 in the jar every time you make a mistake.

What tricks have you used to learn someone else’s pronouns? Let us know in the comments below! 👇

A Blessing in Honor of Dolly and Tim
by Michaelangelo D'Arrigo

Spirit of Love, Mystery beyond every name, and Source of all that binds us together:

Today we give thanks for the fabulous life and witness of Dolly Parton.
For the music that made us laugh, cry, dance, and occasionally question Jolene's life choices. For the enormous hair, unapologetic sparkle, and reminder that sometimes more really is more.

We give thanks especially for the heart beneath the rhinestones: for Dolly's steadfast love for the LGBTQIA2S community, and for her extraordinary commitment to literacy, placing books into the hands of children and opening worlds of possibility.

And as we celebrate one beloved q***r icon, we also pause to remember Tim Curry, whose unforgettable Dr. Frank-N-Furter gave generations of q***r people permission to be outrageous, theatrical, wonderfully strange, and gloriously themselves.

May their gifts remind us to love generously, stand beside those pushed aside, put books into children's hands, sing loudly, laugh often, and leave this world kinder and considerably more fabulous than we found it.

May the Sacred continue to meet us in unexpected places: in books and songs, fishnets and high heels, enormous hair and spectacular rhinestones.

Because sometimes the most sacred thing we can do is simply refuse to dim our light. May it be so.

As we recognize the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Platform for Action today, we recommit ourselves to decolonizing our mission work and advocating for reparations for all those harmed by centuries of enslavement, extractivism, and colonialism. We encourage you to commemorate this anniversary in your local churches and communities and join us in the call for global reparatory justice. https://ow.ly/ot0H50ZGFLe
