IS THE ECUMENICAL CATHOLIC CHURCH REAL?! by Fr. Jim David, Pastor

We’ve been advertising in the Cape Codder for some weeks now with good results – new people are learning about us and some have come to Mass. Recently we learned that Cape Codder has received a letter to the editor claiming that there is no such thing as the Ecumenical Catholic Church.
Please don’t feel bad – we are in good company.

The Roman Catholic Church believes that it is the only true Catholic (and for that matter Christian) Church, and that all other Christian groups, although they are in error for not recognizing the Vatican as their head, nevertheless subsist in the Roman Catholic Church. Most of the rest of Christianity, including the Ecumenical Catholic Church, also believes there is one Catholic (universal) Christian Church – but we believe that all of us, including the Roman Church are in it together. So if you are confronted with claims that we are “not real,” smile and say “Jesus’ peace be with you.” And relax – we are real! (For a more in depth exploration of this, read the following article:

Prayer Shawl Ministry:
SMMC's Prayer Shawl ministry consists of 8 women. They meet monthly to knit and crochet Prayer Shawls. They share patterns and stories and it is a chance to get to know one another on a deeper level. The group usually begins with a prayer to bless their work and an intention for those who will receive it. The shawls get blessed monthly at our Mass with everyone present, touching the shawls and giving them their own blessing.

Benefits of receiving a shawl are varied. They are often considered a special item that the recipient will keep and treasure forever. The shawls provide physical comfort, actual warmth to those going through difficult illness, grieving a loss or trying to work through a situation. A shawl is a tangible reminder that there are others in the world that care for them. Some recipients "pay it forward" by giving their prayer shawl to another in need of prayers.

Benefits of creating a shawl are also varied. It takes their minds off of their own problems as they help someone else. It can heal old wounds, i.e. a cancer survivor might make shawls for chemo patients and thus heal their own pain with each stitch. A group provides camaraderie and companionship. It is a way to bring prayer or meditation into daily life.

Recently, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church invited Our Prayer Shawl Ministry to participate in a 500th celebration of Martin Luther, along with other churches all over the Cape. Over 650 shawls, hats, pocket shawls were displayed. Shawls were draped over the pews, some were hung on clothesline, some on large panels. There were poetry readings, music, prayers and the blessing of all the shawls. The shawls were distributed to other Churches and human service ministries. It was very powerful.

Please feel free to share your prayer shawl "stories."
