He is risen!
The Lord is not in the grave, he was raised from the dead by his own power. Matthew 28:6 “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.” This was what Jesus had told his followers would happen, and the prophets had proclaimed. Their faith should have been strong and their grasp of this doctrine should have been better than it was. There should have been no surprise here from his closet followers. The guards were not sleeping but were greatly afraid at what they saw. This is the greatest miracle in all of human history and the most important day in human history. If this event did not happen then we would all be without hope in this world. This is the core message of the Christian faith and it needs to be given to every person in the world today.

God Bless

Dedicated Learning (II Timothy 2:15)

The practice: God wants each believer to be a student of the scripture that comes from a deep spiritual hunger. I Timothy 2:15a “Study.” To spend time in the scripture must be a high priority on our list. Ezra had the right heart before God and he knew the law of Mosses very well as a priest. Ezra 7:10 “For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.” Ezra was the one who led the group returning to Jerusalem for the purpose of rebuilding the temple. We see Ezra's three fold priority here in verse 10 which was to learn the scripture, live the scripture and lecture the scripture.

The purpose: God wants us to embrace what the Word of God says so will have a vibrant testimony and glorify God. II Timothy 2:15b “to shew thyself approved unto God.” Without studying the scripture we cannot effectively do the will of God in our life. To have the approval of God on our life and for him to be pleased with us means a lot.

The practical: God wants believers to have a clear conscience and a good testimony before people in this world. II Timothy 2:15c “that needeth not to be ashamed.” If we love the scripture and cherish its teachings we are less likely to stray from the truth it promotes. We should rejoice in our study. Psalm 119:162 “I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.” We need to study the scripture and put our heart mind and soul into it. It is a worthwhile investment of our time. When we discover great truths and God speaks to our heart then we ought to rejoice in God’s Word as one that finds great treasure in this world. When someone finds gold, silver or someone other treasure they are happy because of the great wealth that it brings to their life. As we see things in the Word of God we should rejoice because that is what truly brings great wealth to our life. The world has the wrong priorities and it is important as Christians that we have our eyes focused on scripture and never lose sight of his promises.

The plan: Every believer has a biblical mandate to study the scripture and they must not neglect this sacred duty. II Timothy 2:15d “rightly dividing the word of truth.” We must properly interpret the scripture and always keep it in biblical context. We must live by what scripture says it is the foundation for our life and ministry. When people do not build their life, home and ministry on the word of God it will be weak and will crumble. We must study the scripture and teach its principles thoroughly and systematically. Too many churches today are built on personalities and not the principles of scripture. Take notes as you read, learn and God speaks to your heart. These notes should focus on the truth you have learned and how it applies to your life. Organize your notes on a computer or a notebook. Diligently study the scripture and do it on a consistent basis.

(I would encourage people to check out the website: biblefeast.org which has helpful articles and resources in learning the scripture.)

The Story of the Wise Men

Introduction: In Matthew 2:1-12 we see the story of the wise men associated with the birth of Jesus. We have several clues in the bible that help give us a more accurate picture of who they were and how they ended up in Jerusalem.

The Great Mystery

Identity: Who were these mysterious wise men that appeared in the city of Jerusalem? Matthew 2:1 "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem.” Wise men were very influential in the royal court and would be used by the king to help rule over nations that they had conquered. They would select their brightest young minds and train them as Daniel and his 3 friends were.

Illumination: Why were the wise men the only ones who realized the importance of the star? Matthew 2:2 “Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.” None of the political or religious leaders of the Jews seemed concerned or even aware of this event until these men showed up.

Intimidation: Why did the appearance of these travelers from afar bring such fear upon Herod and all the people? Matthew 2:3 “When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.” We need to realize that if there were only three wise riding on camels seeking a child they would have caused no stir in Jerusalem or got an audience with King Herod. There were probably a lot more than 3 wise men and most likely over a 100. Robbers attacked small groups of travelers especially those with wealth. They would have had a large military es**rt provided by the king and this group could have easily numbered 500 to 1,000 or more which I think that it did. These men had wealth, power and influence. When the wise men saw the star over Bethlehem, they were excited and joyful. Why did not Herod and the Jewish leaders rejoice with them? The answer is obvious that they did not share their joy about the messiah and what God was doing at that time. Cold hearts will never seek the truth in any meaningful way in their life as they are shallow and superficial in their approach. They also were from the rival empire to the Rome which would have caused great concern.

The inquiry: When Herod heard what they wanted to know he immediately called the Jewish leadership and demanded an answer. They told Herod the child would be born in Bethlehem as prophesized in Micah 5:2. How sad that Herod had no idea about the answer to their question and shows his ignorance of scripture. When King Herod gets an answer with the Jewish leadership he met privately with the wise men. Herod was deceptive about his motives.

The Great Mission

The main purpose these men made this great trip was to find Jesus. Matthew 2:9 “When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.” It is amazing all they went through to get to Jesus and it shows how important it was to them. When they found Jesus the first thing that they did was worship him in Matthew 2:11. That should be the priority of every believer is to worship God. They were warned by God about Herod in a dream and went home a different way. I believe there were several factors that influenced these men in a profound way. Proverbs 13:20 “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” The primary influences on these men would be as follows.

Daniel: Daniel was greatly respected by the wise men of his day, his writings and legend would have lived on. These men had the best libraries of their day and would have had access to his writings. Daniel wrote about the coming of the messiah in his 70 weeks prophecy in Daniel 9. Which revealed that the Messiah would come as Prince of Israel 483 years after the Persian emperor gave the commandment to the Jews to rebuild Jerusalem (Daniel 9:24,25).

Mordecai and Esther: These two had a profound influence on the kingdom. Esther 8:17 "And in every province, and in every city, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews fell upon them." This event in itself would constrain many of the Persian members of the Magi at that time to study the Jewish sacred books.

Balaam: The wise men would be familiar with Balaam’s prophecy and it is believed he was an early member of this group and may have been the founder. His prophecy they would have been familiar with. Numbers 24:17 "I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth."
Old Testament Scriptures: These men would have had access to the scriptures and from the influence of Daniel and Mordecai they would have been held in high regard. Remember that these men would have not taken this long journey, incurred this great expense unless they really believed in what they were doing. It was not for personal gain or fame, but to worship the King of the Jews that was spoken about clearly in the scriptures.

Conclusion: The fulfillment of the Christmas story was in the resurrection of Jesus from the grave. He came to reconcile sinful mankind back to himself. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Wise men still seek him. God bless and have a Merry Christmas!

Going to God When It Hurts

I Peter 5:7 “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
Complete trust displayed: It is important that we take all your cares to Jesus. The Greek word for “cast” is “EPIRRHIPTO” which means to throw upon or to place upon. We should not seek to hold onto those “cares” and we should give them to Jesus as fast as we can as he is the only one that can handle them. I Peter 5:7a “Casting all your care upon him.” It order to transport hazardous material you must have the hazmat endorsement on your CDL license. We are not able to handle the cares and burdens ourselves and we would easily sink under the load. The word “care” means or anxieties, worries and fears. We need to make sure we are diligent to follow this admonition we have received. We can have the peace of God instead of depending on prescription pills to calm us down. If we don’t learn to cast our cares on Jesus, we will never humble ourselves before him. Remember there is a strong connection between verse 6 and 7.

The focus on prayer: Worry is a poison and it will kill our prayer life if we let it get rooted in our life. Philippians 4:6-7 (6) “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. (7) And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Do not be full of worry, but take everything to God in prayer and leave it with him. There is no situation that God cannot handle we must learn to trust him with everything. For us to cling to something in worry and fear is absolutely foolish. For us to think we need to hang on to our worries when we can give them all to Jesus is not wise. His peace and calmness can flood our soul, encourage our spirit and help our focus to be on him. We must learn to pray more and worry less. The peace of God should be present in our life as we look to Jesus in all things.

The focus on prevention: The mind of every believer needs to be filtered with the Word of God. What we think is very important and we must put our emotions under the control of scripture. Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” To not do that will breed instability and help immaturity, worry and fear to flourish. We must control what goes in our mind and we must have a biblical framework in our thinking. The world's philosophy is bankrupt and we must never embrace it as a Christian. By structuring our thought life after this verse we can filter out all the bad things that would negatively affect our thinking and hurt us spiritually. We need to apply the filter of Philippians 4:8 to our heart and mind. We must see if this is authentic (“true”) so we must determine if it is real or fake. We must see if it is accurate (“honest”) to determine if it is a fair representation of the truth. Then we need to make an assessment (“just”) to see if it is a fair treatment of the subject or person. We must ask is it acceptable (“pure”) as it needs to be wholesome. We have to determine if it is adorable (“lovely”) and see if it encourages respect. We must see what kind of advertisement (“good report”) it gives and we should analyze if it is encouraging, edifies or provides a warning. Finally does it promote admiration (“virtue and praise”) and promote the quest for moral excellence.

The focus on purity: If we apply the Word of God to our life then the God of peace shall be with us. Philippians 4:9 “Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.” When we apply the scripture to our life God will always bless that and help us grow.

Compassionate tenderness declared: We must never forget that Jesus not only cares for us, but he has the power to heal your hurt and help restore you. I Peter 5:7 “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” There are times when are heart is heavy with great grief and the Lord will comfort you during those times. It is important that we draw close to God and not run from him in our hurt. That type of twisted logic comes from worldly thinking and we must come to God in surrender looking for his help and strength. My mom and dad are both gone and my beloved wife of 30 years was taken home to heaven as well. God has sustained and strengthened me during each of those trials and continues to do so. Every trial of life he is there as well. When the tears flow (and they will) God is always there for us. Never get bitter or blame God for anything he is always there for you and no one loves you more. Take all your burdens to the Lord for he loves you greatly.

A Priority for Moses

Moses is very passionate about his relationship with God and the words he speaks here come directly from his heart. Exodus 33:15-16 (15) “And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence. (16) For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.” Moses begs God to lead the way himself into the promise land. The very presence of God is what would distinguish Israel as a people from every other nation upon the face of the earth. Moses did not want the promise land which was a huge blessing if they could not have the presence of God. This desire shows the depth of love that Moses had for God and how much he valued his presence. Most people would jump at the promise land blessings and would not be concerned about God's presence. Baby Christians are happy as long as they have blessings, but mature Christians are not content unless they have the presence of God in their lives. This should be our number one priority is to develop a close relationship with God. Sadly many Christians in America are not concerned with God’s presence and that is why people with that mindset chase the shallow substitutes that a spiritually weak church would offer. Anyone who just wants the garment of religion around their “happiness” needs a stronger more mature focus in their life. Thankfully God is patient and hopefully we will be a good learner as we seek to draw closer to Jesus in our life.

The Beauty of Grace

Introduction: In these final verses that deal with genealogy are very exciting indeed when you unpack them. Ruth 4:18-23 (18) “Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron, (19) And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, (20) And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon, (21) And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, (22) And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.” The power of God and his incredible design for his plans are on full display here.

His greatness: We see that Ruth is the great grandmother of King David which puts her in the lineage of Jesus. This is such an incredible blessing. God not only answers prayer, but he can show us things beyond our expectations that are too great for our mind to comprehend. Jeremiah 33:3 “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” God's power has no limits and we need to trust him for great things.

His grace: A beautiful picture of grace is given in this story and the account in Matthew even sheds more light on it. Matthew 1:5-6 (5) “And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; (6) And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias.” God clearly shows he honors faith in him as he has clearly stated in many scriptures that he would. God showcases two Gentile women in this verse who would have been looked down on by most Jews and honored their faith in a great way. You cannot please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6) and he will honor no matter what the persons background or social standing is. God also clearly showed that he is the God of a second chance which offers great hope to all that will turn to him. God put a Gentile named Rahab in the line of Christ as well as Ruth. Consider the life of Rahab before her conversion was very wicked and immoral. She was a harlot before she got saved and we see that faith in the true and living God totally transformed her life and blessed her beyond measure. Rahab was living in a condemned city with no hope. She exercised great faith as her life was changed by what she heard that God did in Egypt with the nation of Israel. Everyone else in her city knew what God had done as well since they were afraid of the Israel and had the entire city on security lock down at the time the spies came. She was willing to go against everything in her culture that she was raised with and at one time embraced. True faith brings cleansing and forgiveness from God. She had a son named Boaz who would marry Ruth.

His guidance: God brought Boaz and Ruth together. Ruth was raised in a pagan culture though she did not have an immoral background in her life. She had married into a Jewish family that was out of the will of God. She lost her husband and God began to work in her mother-in-law’s heart and hers as well. She willing left her pagan culture behind and followed God by faith and she was blessed beyond measure for it. I remember when I received Jesus as my savior I left the religion I was raised in and went to a Christian college. My family was not happy with that and tried to talk me out of it. Boaz had a mother who was a Gentile and used to be a harlot. No doubt she told her testimony and what God had done for her and Boaz recognized her changed life and loved his mother very much. The reason why I believe he could accept Ruth is because of her glowing testimony and he remembered what God had done for her mother and he knew the life Ruth was transformed as well. What a touching story of love, redemption and restoration this is. The grandson of Ruth was Jesse and he had a son David who would be king of Israel one day. Not only was Ruth in the genealogy of Jesus her great grandson would be the greatest king of Israel. It all started when she surrendered her life to God in Ruth chapter one. Decisions we make today will impact our life tomorrow.

Learning to articulate what you believe and why with clarity is important. It does not need to be eloquent, but must come from your heart using sound logic infused with wisdom. This will create a healthy discussion about important matters in our world as well as the eternal destiny of our soul. Relationships are the most important thing in the world. The principles of faith, family and freedom are the cornerstone of any vibrant society.

When people seek to demonize others who disagree with their ideology, use inflammatory rhetoric to incite hatred and violence, it will then seek to censor, control, and cruelly crush all who oppose their point of view. This shows how bankrupt of morals they really are. It is more than a difference of political or philosophical viewpoints but at its core it is good versus evil. The recent assassination of Charlie Kirk represents a very disturbing cancer in our modern day society in America. When the words he spoke could not be disproved in a healthy debate the radical left then resorted to cold blooded murder to try to silence his voice. For people to rejoice in that in online celebrations or some politicians to insinuate that he deserved it is wrong and rotten to the core. The radical left has demonstrated that they are pure evil at their core and they have a cult like mentality is trying to force their views upon people at all costs.

We must resist such evil in our nation. We need to remember the exhortation that Jesus gave to his followers to be salt and light. Light defuses darkness and salt prevents decay. We need to do both on a daily basis. Build a strong relationship with God, your family and the friends that God has blessed you with. Never sever a relationship because of a political or philosophical difference, but learn to love and respect even those you may disagree with. My desire is to state the truth with conviction, share it with compassion and stand for it with courage. This beautiful land we call America is a blessing from God and it is worth fighting for and preserving for the next generation. God bless.
