The Precision of An Office Title
1 Corinthians 2:6-8, (KJV)
“Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”
There is a current trend in the church, today, that suggests that titles and the use of titles no longer matters. Some even suggest that to not use a title is somehow an act of humility. That sounds deeply religious, but it is not scriptural. The Holy Spirt gave titles for very distinct and specific reasons. Titles give a vocabulary to the wisdom of God. The Apostle Paul, whom God used to reveal to us the government of the Kingdom in the New Testament, did not just randomly come up with titles. He was given these titles/offices by revelation and inspiration.
2 Timothy 3:16, (KJV)
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
Titles are the language of heaven, and titles reveal the wisdom of heaven. When we use a title, we speak the wisdom of God. Biblical offices existed in heaven before they were ever manifested on the earth.
1 Corinthians 2:13, (KJV)
“Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”
When we use a title, we speak the wisdom of God. The words that man’s wisdom speaks does not point to any heavenly thing and it does not compare spiritual with spiritual. Titles are what the Holy Spirit, “teacheth,” because He taught them to Paul. And if this indeed be the case, then why do we shun the use of titles and then suggest to ourselves that we are too humble to use a title?
We think that instead of the use of the title we should just create an alternate vocabulary that says things like, “Just call me brother, or call me a servant.” You may think it sounds very humble, but, it is hidden pride. Now, notice what the Apostle Paul said, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit:
