We continued our series in 1&2 Samuel this weekend and found that Israel chose a human king over God and quickly discovers the cost, yet God still refuses to abandon them. Pastor Kyle shared this story to show how God’s faithfulness remains steady even when we’ve made painful, “hot pepper” choices. We’re invited to own our failures, turn back, and follow the One who never forsakes His people!

Ever insisted on something you wanted, only to realize later it wasn't what you needed? Israel did exactly that in 1 Samuel—demanding a king they could see, even after God warned them it would be like biting into a spicy chili pepper thinking it's an apple.

God gave them what they asked for in King Saul, but not without warning them first. Sometimes God allows us to have our "chili peppers" to teach us that His way is always best. The question is: What chili pepper are you still asking God for? Or maybe you're already chewing on one, realizing just how spicy it really is?

Here's the beautiful part—even when we choose poorly, God doesn't abandon us. He was present with Saul, working through lost donkeys and divine appointments. God uses even our detours for His purposes.

This week, ask yourself: Am I seeking what I want, or what God knows is best for me?

What if the lost donkeys and annoying “detours” in your week are actually God quietly directing your path?

Guest speaker Audrey Wells walked us through 1 Samuel 9–10 and Israel’s demand for a visible king, and we can we see how God sometimes gives us the “spicy chili peppers” we insist on so we can finally recognize how much we need Him. This teaching invites you to rethink your frustrations, your unanswered prayers, and even your bad decisions as places where God is still deeply at work!

Ever feel the pressure to just blend in? To face the same direction as everyone else in the elevator of life?

This week's message from 1 Samuel 7-8 reminds us that God calls us to be different. Israel had victory, peace, and God fighting their battles, but they threw it away because they wanted to be "like all the nations." They traded God's leadership for a human king, and Samuel warned them: that king will take and take and take.

We do the same thing when we conform to the world instead of standing out as God's light. But here's the good news: we serve a King who didn't take from us. He gave everything for us! When life gets hard and we're tempted to give up our freedom and follow the crowd, remember what the Lord has done. Put up your "stone of remembrance" and trust that God has helped you thus far, and He's not done yet.

Will you choose to be set apart today?
