DON’T READ THIS CASUALLY… THIS MESSAGE MAY DETERMINE WHETHER YOU ARE READY OR NOT WHEN IT MATTERS MOST.
THE MISTAKE THAT CLOSED THE DOOR ON THE FOOLISH VIRGINS.
There is a parable Jesus told in Matthew 25:1–13 that many people read, but very few truly understand.
Ten virgins.
All waiting.
All expecting the bridegroom.
All carrying lamps.
But only five entered,
and five were shut out.
The most painful part is this:
they were not strangers,
they were not unbelievers,
they were not outsiders.
They were part of the waiting group.
Yet the door was closed on them.
Why?
Let’s go deeper.
THEY HAD LAMPS BUT NO OIL
The Bible says the foolish virgins took their lamps, but took no oil with them.
This is the first and greatest mistake.
The lamp represents outward appearance,
the oil represents inner life.
The lamp is what people see,
the oil is what God sees.
Many today have the lamp:
church attendance,
Christian language,
religious identity,
public appearance.
But they lack the oil:
true relationship with God,
consistent spiritual life,
inner transformation,
personal conviction and obedience.
You can look ready and still not be ready.
That is the tragedy.
THEY PREPARED FOR THE MOMENT BUT NOT FOR THE DELAY
The Bible says the bridegroom delayed.
And this is where the foolish were exposed.
They had enough oil for the beginning,
but not enough to endure the waiting.
Many people are excited at the start of their journey with God.
They pray, fast, and are passionate.
But when time passes,
when answers delay,
when life becomes routine,
their fire goes down.
The foolish virgins did not plan for endurance.
They prepared for excitement, not for consistency.
But the Kingdom is not for starters only,
it is for those who can continue.
THEY DEPENDED ON OTHERS
When their lamps were going out, they ran to the wise and said,
“Give us some of your oil.”
But the wise said no.
This reveals another deep truth:
spiritual life is personal.
You cannot borrow someone’s relationship with God.
You cannot depend on another person’s fire.
You cannot survive on borrowed spirituality.
Many people depend on:
their pastor,
their church,
their friends.
But when the moment comes,
only what is inside you will speak.
THEY REALIZED TOO LATE
The most painful part of the story is this:
they knew what to do,
but they did it late.
They went to buy oil,
but while they were going,
the bridegroom came.
Timing matters.
Delayed obedience is dangerous.
There are things you can fix today,
but if you postpone them,
you may meet a closed door tomorrow.
THE DOOR WAS SHUT
This is the final and most serious part.
The Bible says the door was shut.
And when they came back and knocked, saying,
“Lord, Lord, open to us,”
He answered,
“I do not know you.”
This was not lack of awareness,
it was lack of relationship.
They knew Him in name,
but not in intimacy.
That is the difference.
THE REAL MISTAKE
It was not just lack of oil.
It was a life of assumption.
They assumed:
they had time,
they were ready,
they would enter,
they were fine.
But assumption is dangerous in spiritual matters.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US TODAY?
This parable is not about fear,
it is about preparation.
It is a wake up call.
Check your oil:
do you truly know God, or just know about Him?
Check your consistency:
are you growing daily, or only when it is convenient?
Check your dependence:
are you standing on your own walk, or leaning on others?
Check your urgency:
are you postponing what God is asking you to do?
Because one day, the door will close.
And at that moment,
it will not be about what you intended to do,
it will be about what you actually did.
TEACHING SUMMARY
The foolish virgins missed their moment because:
they had appearance without substance,
they prepared for the start but not for the delay,
they depended on others instead of building their own relationship,
they delayed what should have been done early,
they assumed they were ready when they were not.
The door did not close because God is wicked.
The door closed because they were unprepared.
HEAR THIS CLEARLY
Not everyone waiting will enter.
Not everyone who looks ready is ready.
Not everyone who says, “Lord, Lord,” knows Him.
This is not to scare you,
this is to wake you up.
Fix your oil.
Build your relationship.
Stay consistent.
Stop delaying.
Because when the moment comes,
preparation will speak louder than intention.
