This Sunday we will explore God’s grace and mercy actively breaking traditional and religious rules to reach out to the broken, the outcast, and the seemingly hopeless.

Both Matthew and Romans point to the incredible truth that God's love isn't something you earn by being "good enough" or strictly following religious laws. In Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26, Jesus demonstrates this by physically healing the unclean and eating with sinners. In Romans 4:13-25, Paul explains this conceptually by showing that from the very beginning (with Abraham), God's grace is received through simple, radical trust in God's promises.

In a culture that teaches that we earn our rewards through hard word and savvy, it can be difficult to comprehend AND accept God's gifts as freely GIVEN to us. God has already set the table and it is overflowing with bounty. All we have to do is accept the invitation and sit down.

Will you sit with us Sunday at 10:15am? I hope so.

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Patrick

Dear disciples of Christ,
This coming Sunday we will dive into Matthew 28:16-20 (The Great Commission) and 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 (Paul’s Benediction). These readings are foundational New Testament passages. The first issues the marching orders for the Christian faith, "go and make disciples of all the nations;" while the second provides a blessing of unity, directly tying the active presence of God to everyday relationships.

In the New Living Translation of the Bible that we use in church, and in many other translations, Paul's letter ends with the statement: "All of God’s people here send you their greetings" or some variation thereof. However, in other translations, the letter ends with more of a blessing: "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you."

When we look at the translations that present more of a blessing, we can see a theme connecting our lectionary readings: both passages share a profound emphasis on the Trinity. While Matthew's Gospel focuses on the missionary nature of the Triune God (baptizing all nations in their name), 2 Corinthians focuses on the relational nature of God (experiencing His grace, love, and fellowship within the community of believers.

Are we ready to undertake the Great Commission? Are we ready to accept the grace of the Triune God? Perhaps we apply grace to the mission and see where it takes us?
See you Sunday at 10:15am!

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Patrick

Dear Walkers of the Way,

This coming Sunday is the Day of Pentecost! Our lectionary readings are John 20:19-23 and 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13. Both highlight the Holy Spirit, but with different focuses. In John, the resurrected Jesus appears to his disciples in a locked room, transforming their fear into peace and joy. He breathes on the disciples and says, "Receive the Holy Spirit," a deliberate echo of Genesis 2:7 where God breathes physical life into Adam. Here, Jesus is giving them new, spiritual life.

In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul addresses divisions in their newborn church, explaining how the Holy Spirit functions within the community. Furthermore, the Spirit gives different gifts to different people (wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, etc.). These are not for personal status or boasting, but distributed "for the common good," as Paul illustrates in comparing the church to a physical human body. Just as a body has hands, eyes, and ears that all rely on one another, individual believers are unified by "one and the same Spirit." All believers, regardless of their background, are baptized into this single spiritual body.

Fear into peace and joy. Division into unity. Let us accept these divine gifts in unison with each other and our Lord.

See you Sunday,
Pastor Patrick

* "May God...and...Jesus Christ give you grace and peace:"

This coming Sunday we will explore John 17:1-11 and 1 Peter 4:12-14 & 5:6-11. John shows Jesus praying for glorification through the completion of God's work, defining eternal life as knowing God, and interceding for his disciples. Peter encourages believers to embrace suffering for Christ as shared glory, while staying sober, humble, and vigilant against the devil. Together, they offer a theology of suffering, trust, and ultimate victory through God's power.

Connecting themes to consider - Unity: Jesus prays that believers are one. Glory through Suffering: Both passages connect earthly suffering/death to divine glory. Divine Protection: Jesus protects the disciples in John, while God sustains the believers in Peter.

Please join us this Sunday at 10:15am.
All are welcome!

Pastor Patrick

"May God...and...Jesus Christ give you grace and peace:"
This coming Sunday we will explore John 14:15-21 and 1 Peter 3:13-22. These readings focus on living as faithful followers of Christ in a challenging world through the power of the Holy Spirit. John emphasizes love shown through obedience and the promise of the Advocate (the Spirit), while Peter calls for readiness to defend one's faith with gentleness, even amid unjust suffering.
Unifying themes to consider: Power for Life - believers are empowered by the Holy Spirit (John) or the resurrection life of Christ (1 Peter) to live faithfully, rather than by their own strength. Active Witness - live a life that is distinct from the world, whether through active love (John) or a quiet, prepared witness during persecution (1 Peter).

This coming Sunday we will explore John 14:1-14 and 1 Peter 2:2-10. Leaving the metaphor of the shepherd and the gate from last week behind, masonry will now be used to help make Jesus' teachings relatable.
The Scripture selections emphasize finding comfort and identity in Jesus as the divine Way. John features Jesus promising to prepare a heavenly home, declaring himself the only way to the Lord, while Peter builds on this, calling believers "living stones" built into a spiritual house, a chosen priesthood, and holy nation.
If we are the living stones being built into a spiritual house, and Jesus is preparing a place for us in "my Father’s home" (or house) is Jesus actually bringing us back to ourselves? To our forgotten, but true identity as Holy creations already within (at home) God?
Perhaps heaven is not some location above, to be reached at some point in the future. Perhaps, heaven is not a destination, but a state of being. When God and God's children are united in spirit, Heaven reigns! The kingdom of heaven is upon us, right now, everytime we turn to our Lord.

Be blessed,
Pastor Patrick
