On My Heart
Called to Contend

“Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints." Jude 3

John MacArthur Jr. said, "The Christian life is not adding Jesus to one's own way of life but renouncing that personal way of life for His and being willing to pay whatever cost that may require." Jude the half brother of Jesus reminds us that one of the costs that following Christ requires is that we "contend earnestly for the faith." We live in a day when truth is alarmingly subjective and Biblical truth is considered primitive. Definitive and absolute truth is largely rejected by the majority. That is evidenced in the fact that if anyone dares to speak the truth they are quickly castigated. Even worse than speaking the truth is to dare to live and contend (battle) for the truth. As followers of Christ Jesus we should never be unkind or resort to the worldly ways of strife and conflict. But we are to speak the truth in love, and therefore lovingly fight for the truth. We must remember that our warfare is not of this world or accomplished with worldly methods, "for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses" 2 Cor 10:4 Yet we must contend. Why? Because Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me." He is the truth and worthy of whatever it may cost us.

On My Heart
The Lord, My Song

“The Lord is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation; This is my God, and I will praise Him; My father’s God, and I will extol Him. “The Lord is a warrior; The Lord is His name." Exodus 15:2

Exodus 15 tells us about the reaction of Moses and the Israelites after crossing the Red Sea. Freshly delivered from the hand of Pharaoh and protected by the hand of God, they sang. They sang because they knew the Lord was their strength, for He had opened up the sea and led them through on dry land. They knew the Lord was their salvation, for He had closed the sea on the enemy and they were safe on the other side. They knew the Lord was God and a warrior, for He delivered them through a divine miracle. All of us have experienced the strong saving hand of God in our lives, whether we recognized it or not. But Moses also said, "The Lord is my song." How is the Lord our song? I am sure there is a lot we could say at this point, but here is my heart about it. If Moses and the Israelites had been defeated, had died or had been carried back into captivity they wouldn't have had anything to sing about! Our song is an expression of our passion, our joy, our admiration, our gratitude. We sing and worship what we adore, and our song is to be offered to the One who is worthy. As for the Israelites, they sang to the One who had delivered them from bo***ge, from imminent danger and brought them safely to the other side. We have an even greater reason to sing. Jesus delivered us from a greater bo***ge (sin), a greater danger (hell) and has brought us to a greater place of safety (eternal life). Through His Cross and Resurrection, some glorious day, He will safely deliver us to the other side. Yes, brother and sister, Jesus is my strength and my song! ~ Pastor Jeff

On My Heart
Longing for God

“Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." Psalm 73:25-26

A.W. Tozer once said, "In the midst of this great coldness towards God there are some I rejoice, who deliberately long after God. They want to taste, to touch with their hearts, and see with their inner eyes the wonder of God." Oh Father, may we long to experience Your great wonder, to taste, to touch and to see Jesus and be enlightened by your Holy Spirit! Some of us are longing for that today and one day in glory that inner longing will be made complete. Yet how do we know the passion of God's own heart in our today experience? First and foremost, we must recognize His majesty, His beauty, His authority and His Sovereign work on the Cross. We also must surrender to Him and love Him supremely Yet, there is more required to experience the wonder of God. If we are to see, feel, taste and touch the majesty and wonder of God then we must be where He is and doing what
He is doing. God wants us to be passionate about His Wonder and passionate about His Work. James reminds us that "faith without works is dead." (James 2:26) Longing for God means we long for His work. We have much to accomplish together in the days ahead. Our craving God together requires both our hearts and our hands. Solomon wrote, "The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied." (Proverbs 13:4) Lord, put Your greatness in my heart and in my hands. ~ Pastor Jeff

On My Heart
The Rock of My Heart

“Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." Psalm 73:25-26

Sometimes it is a short trip to discouragement. One wrong action, circumstance or word can change our day in an instant. Billy Graham once said, “The Christian life is not a constant high. I have my moments of deep discouragement. I have to go to God in prayer with tears in my eyes, and say, ‘O God, forgive me,’ or ‘Help me.’” I don’t know about you, but sometimes I find myself asking both of those things at the same time. Asaph was a worship leader and is the author of Psalm 73. He is discouraged and allows himself to be overwhelmed with self-pity. Been there, done that… His issue is that he looks around and sees that the wicked do not stress or worry and seem to have it all while he suffers in service to the Lord. He throws himself a grand pity party. Fortunately for him, he is looking to the Lord for answers and sees the ultimate outcome of the wicked. (vs 17) He also remembers God’s promise of His presence, His counsel and His glory. He remembers that the Lord is with Him now and will bring Him home. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that when we have Jesus, we have it all. We have everything we need. Asaph says, “God is the strength of my heart”. The word translated strength is “rock”, “rock wall” or “boulder”. Asaph says, “God is the solid rock of my heart”. He is our Rock Wall! He also says the Lord is his “portion forever”. He is the rock wall of our inheritance forever. Dear brother and sister, never forget when discouragement raises its ugly head that God is your rock and inheritance that cannot be taken away, no matter what happens here. ~ Pastor Jeff

On My Heart
School Time!

"(that you) may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled to all the fullness of God." Ephesians 3:18-19

Hurray, Summer is over and the kids are headed back to school! Oh, wait, where is the erase button on my keyboard, that’s not nice…lol. Yep, what a fast Summer. School is back and the education process begins again. Students, listen to what wise King Solomon said, “But beyond this, my son, be warned: the writing of many books is endless, and excessive study is wearying to the body.” (Eccl 12:12) He also said, “And I applied my mind to know wisdom and to know insanity and foolishness; I realized that this also is striving after wind. Because in much wisdom there is much grief; and increasing knowledge results in increasing pain.” (Eccl 1:8) Amen, who needs school, right? Wrong. Solomon was seeking contentment and joy through wisdom and knowledge rather than through the Lord God. Paul said, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” (2 Tim 2:15) Solomon also said, “How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen above silver.” (Proverbs 16:16) One of these days, you will finish your formal education, and you will head out into the working world. But your learning is not to end. There is a greater, more fulfilling knowledge that we all must pursue. We must never abandon our passion “to know the love of Christ which surpasses all knowledge.” The greatest active learning in our lives is to know Christ’s love by our head knowledge and our heart knowledge of Him. That is to know Jesus through personal experience as well as personal study. Such knowledge is wonderful. (see Ps 139) ~ Pastor Jeff
