Greetings friends,
A terrible tragedy occurred in our state yesterday when a woman was killed by an ICE officer in Minneapolis. Like many of you, we spent much of the day holding a range of emotions: confusion, anger, fear, exhaustion, and deep sadness. With the prophets of old, we cry out for justice to be done and for responsibility to be discerned through the courts.
Yesterday afternoon, a person employed in a ministry of our church posted comments in response to a Facebook post by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. Those comments do not represent Peace Church.
Tensions are high, fuses are short, and anxiety churns in the waters of our society. At Peace Church, we remain committed to our mission of being and becoming more like Jesus to help our neighbors know God. We are a community of diverse people with diverse perspectives. Each person has the right to express personal viewpoints, and when we miss the mark of “becoming more like Jesus,” we seek to name the error, pursue reconciliation, and grow toward better faithfulness in the future.
Grace and truth go hand in hand. We are committed to pursuing truth together and extending grace as the means by which we grow more like Jesus.
Together, as followers of Jesus, we will be discussing wise and faithful use of social media. We will continue to pursue justice and love in our community, calling both ourselves and others - within and beyond Peace Church - to live up to these highest ideals. Most importantly, we will continue to affirm that every human being is made in the image of God and is worthy of love and respect. That conviction must be reflected in our words, actions, and online interactions, correcting one another in love when we miss the mark.
May God’s Spirit lead you in the days ahead - comforting your fears, giving you courage as you pursue justice, and drawing us toward unity in the midst of our diversity.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Brett
