BEAR WITH ME...

The other day someone shared a video of a sermon with me. It was of a former lead pastor I used to work with. He's at another church now, leading another congregation.

While listening to the sermon, I was getting upset. The man's lies and narcissism were still on full display. It brought up the pain he caused me and others that worked with him (as well as those that were a part of his congregation).

I stewed on this for a couple of days. Then, as I was prepping for our new Philippians series, these two verses punched me right in the gut. The bitterness that had been stirring started to disappear.

You see, I was angry that this man was getting to pastor at another church. In my mind it wasn't fair after all the hurt and destruction that he caused. But Paul's words reminded me that as long as the Good News about Jesus is being preached, then the motives don't matter.

We can't know what the true motives are in each and every person. But we do know what Jesus' motives are. They're right there in the Bible. Love, grace, and mercy...those should motivate us all.

Grateful for the way God has used so many people from many different walks of life to help me in my journey. Even the ones who caused me pain, have served a purpose in His plan for me.

I pray you’ll be grateful for those who have come and gone, along with those who are still there.

I was listening to this song the other day and these lyrics really caught my attention. I’m a Christian and a pastor and let me be honest…I struggle.

I struggle with thinking I’m worthless. I struggle with thinking I’m a screw up. I struggle with thinking I’m a terrible follower of Christ. And I struggle with being a pastor and thinking I can’t help people because I’m struggling myself.

Jesus told the disciples, “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” (John‬ ‭14‬:‭27‬ ‭NLT‬‬)

A big part of my problem (and why I struggle) is I look to the things of this world for peace. And you know what? I keep coming up empty.

We learn in Psalms that it’s better to look to the LORD:

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” (Psalms‬ ‭34‬:‭18‬ ‭NLT‬‬)

If you’re struggling and looking for peace, I encourage you to seek out the Prince of Peace. Unlike the world, He won’t leave you feeling empty.

The other day I finished watching a TV series. When it got to the end, I thought “This main character could’ve avoided all of this pain, humiliation, and heartbreak that he put upon himself and others if he’d just let go of his pride.” Now, that was practical thinking and doesn’t make for a good dramatic TV series, but it’s the simple truth.

We tend to be like that as well. Our pride gets the best of us and ends up bringing on pain, humiliation, and heartbreak. The way to counter this is to follow Christ’s example and humble ourselves.

You make think your pride has taken you too far out to where you’re past the point of no return, but it’s never too late to walk in humbleness. Just ask God for His help and He will give it.

I wholeheartedly agree with these verses. I also believe what it says in Proverbs 15:1 says:

“A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.”

There seem to be many destructive things going on in our society right now. Things that are very contrary to God. How we as believers respond is crucial.

Ephesians 4:29 is another good reminder of how we should respond:

“Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”

Still speak Biblical truth, just do it in kindness and love.

When you’ve done something last minute without any preparation, has it ever worked out just exactly how you wanted it to? Maybe it has, but most likely not.

It’s important to prepare and I believe it’s important to prepare for what the enemy is throwing at us. He is trying to distract us and have us go down a path far away from our Father.

And self-control is an integral part as it keeps us focused. The more focused we are, the better we can block out the distractions that keep us from that hope in Jesus.

This is so true! The enemy wants you distracted to get you off course. And sometimes it doesn’t take much to get us distracted. It can be your phone, TV, work, video games, etc.

Stay focused and put Him first!

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”

Peter was referring to Paul’s writing here in this verse. It’s wild to see the parallels to what was happening then and how it’s happening now. There are many out there that are trying to twist the Scriptures to fit their narrative.

This is why it’s so important to stay rooted in God’s Word. Don’t just take what’s in a post or 3 minute video and think it’s Biblical truth. It’s worth it to put in the time and dig a little deeper.

I encourage you to read 2 Peter. It’s only three chapters long. Take a break from watching reels and get into the Word. 🙂

The other night my wife and I watched a TV show that had a side storyline about a father trying to reconnect with his daughter after many years. I found myself rooting for the relationship to be mended and it was headed in that direction.

Then in one scene it came crashing down. The father’s motives were shown to be purely selfish and the daughter was hurt. I felt hurt (even though it was just a show).

I was bothered because this seems typical. Often times dads are portrayed as clueless, aloof, cold, selfish, hard, and the list could go on. It doesn’t seem like they’re portrayed in a positive light as much as they used to be (Andy Griffith, anyone?).

I know I struggle as a father A LOT. And my dad wasn’t the best fatherly role model for me growing up (he didn’t come to know Jesus until his 50’s). But I feel like many of us dads are trying to do better.

Even though I am my own worst critic, I take hope in God the Father. He has set the example for all fathers. And He won’t let us down for selfish reasons because He is the Father of love.

Thank you, Father. Please continue to mold us fathers to be more like You.

In this passage it says the paralyzed man was brought by “four men.” I’d like to think these four men were his friends because I wouldn’t think four non-friends would go to all this trouble for someone they didn’t care for.

It was their faith in Jesus that helped this man. They knew he needed to reach Jesus. They knew he needed to be near Jesus. They knew Jesus would make things better.

I hope we all can have friends like that. And I hope we can be a friend like that. Are you ready to pick up that mat?

Through Christ I will overcome.

“Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.”
