Colossians 3:16 "Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts."
It's very important that the songs that we sing about God are not only be biblically based but are actually supposed to be sufficient for teaching and admonishing (or correcting). Many churches today look to choose songs that are newer and more "relevant" to this age. The question is, are they sufficient for the requirements laid out in Colossians 3? Let's take a look at 2 songs about our heavenly Father.
"Oh, I've heard a thousand stories of what they think You're like
But I've heard the tender whisper of love in the dead of night
And You tell me that You're pleased and that I'm never alone
You're a good, good Father
It's who You are, it's who You are, it's who You are
And I'm loved by You
It's who I am, it's who I am, it's who I am"
What do we learn about the Father in this? The only things that can be picked out is that 1) He loves us, 2) He's pleased with us, 3) He's good...good...
Now let's look at an older one.
"How deep the Father's love for us,
How vast beyond all measure!
That He should give His only Son,
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss!
The Father turns His face away;
As wounds which marred the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory."
What do we learn about the Father in this one? 1) He loved us to such a degree, that He sent Jesus to earth to take our place, so that we may have fellowship with Him once again. How did Jesus take our place? "But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed."
If you go back and read all the lyrics to both these songs, one paints a vague and really unexplained picture, the other walks through the entirety of the gospel message, from God sending His son, to our response. "I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no power, no wisdom, but I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection."
Let the desires of our worship not be for emotions or modernity, but for the message it proclaims to be derived from His holy word
