"’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed!"

How many of us meditate on the theological statement in this verse? "twas grace that taught my heart to fear", what is it that we were taught to fear? This verse is saying that it's by God's grace we are even able to understand the magnitude of our sin, and when that understanding comes, it is accompanied with fear of a righteous God who, though He may be patient and long suffering, will bring judgement down on sin.

Matthew 16:13-17 "'13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven."

Jesus is not giving a blessing to Peter for giving the right answer to this question. He's letting him know he's already been blessed because God in His grace has chosen to reveal Jesus' identity to him.

It's not our wisdom, knowledge or intelligence that allows us to recognize Jesus as Lord. It is only by the grace and love of God the Father that we are able to recognize Jesus as Lord, and our need for Him as our Savior. How amazing is His grace that He not only offers us a means of salvation, He gives us the understanding so that we can accept it because if left to ourselves, we would flat out reject it.

Romans 5:10 "For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life."

Colossians 3:16 "Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts."

It's very important that the songs that we sing about God are not only be biblically based but are actually supposed to be sufficient for teaching and admonishing (or correcting). Many churches today look to choose songs that are newer and more "relevant" to this age. The question is, are they sufficient for the requirements laid out in Colossians 3? Let's take a look at 2 songs about our heavenly Father.

"Oh, I've heard a thousand stories of what they think You're like
But I've heard the tender whisper of love in the dead of night
And You tell me that You're pleased and that I'm never alone
You're a good, good Father
It's who You are, it's who You are, it's who You are
And I'm loved by You
It's who I am, it's who I am, it's who I am"

What do we learn about the Father in this? The only things that can be picked out is that 1) He loves us, 2) He's pleased with us, 3) He's good...good...

Now let's look at an older one.

"How deep the Father's love for us,
How vast beyond all measure!
That He should give His only Son,
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss!
The Father turns His face away;
As wounds which marred the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory."

What do we learn about the Father in this one? 1) He loved us to such a degree, that He sent Jesus to earth to take our place, so that we may have fellowship with Him once again. How did Jesus take our place? "But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed."

If you go back and read all the lyrics to both these songs, one paints a vague and really unexplained picture, the other walks through the entirety of the gospel message, from God sending His son, to our response. "I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no power, no wisdom, but I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection."

Let the desires of our worship not be for emotions or modernity, but for the message it proclaims to be derived from His holy word

Why do you read your Bible? Is it because that's what a good Christian does? Are you reading out of an obligation to be obedient to God? Are you looking for something positive to uplift you and make you feel good? Or are you reading because the God of the universe has revealed Himself to us through His word and you want to know Him more?

There is value in learning and living by the Bible since it is God's laws that govern this world. However, the reason you read is far more valuable than reading itself. Belief in God isn't evidence of salvation. James writes in Chapter 2 "you believe that God is one, you do well. Even the demons believe, and shudder". Salvation comes when there is a true relationship with God, that's why we can call the all powerful, all knowing creator of the universe "Father". He is our Father and we are His children.

Those whom you love and have a relationship with, you want to know more, and the way to know God more is through His word. The better we understand His word, the more we know about Him, and the more we know about Him, the more we want to emulate Him and His righteousness, in accordance with what Jesus said, "Be ye holy as I am holy".

As you read your Bible, do so in a manner to try and understand what about God is revealed in the passage read. What are you able to understand about God and who He is in the passages that you read?
