Christmas Comes Early for Children and Teens Fighting Cancer

Dyer Presbyterian Church in Dyer, IN celebrated the gift of giving during their eighth annual Christmas in July toy drive to benefit the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation. Parishioners collected toys and $250 to help children and teens fighting cancer. During the past eight years, the Christmas Comes Early event has raised thousands of toys, and teen items, $600 and $75 in gift cards.

Dyer Presbyterian Church parishioner Alan Brooks said, "This is our congregation's favorite thing to do. We have had members deal with cancer and when it comes to children it touches all of our hearts.

Moravian Daily Texts

Monday, August 24 — Psalm 103:6–18
Judges 7; Luke 19:45–20:8

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Psalm 23:5

While he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the l***r, as he sat at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar and poured the ointment on his head. But some were there who said to one another in anger, “Why was the ointment wasted in this way?” But Jesus said, “Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has performed a good service for me.” Mark 14:3-4,6

Open our eyes, Lord, to the various ways in which people worship you. May our variety of traditions and customs be a blessing to you, your church, and your children. Amen.

Prelude

*Call to Worship

As one body we have many members,

each uniquely gifted for a particular purpose.

We, who are many, are one body in Christ.

Prophets and poets, thinkers and teachers,

artists and advocates, consolers and caregivers.

We, who are many, are one body in Christ.

With thanksgiving we offer our varied gifts

in service to Christ, who makes us one.

Let us glorify the Lord!

*Opening Prayer

Almighty God,

you have taught us

that all our deeds without love are worth nothing.

Send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts

that most excellent gift of love,

the very bond of peace and of all goodness;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

*Hymn Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken # 81

1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God. God, whose word cannot be broken, formed thee for a blest abode. On the rock of ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou may'st smile at all thy foes. 2 Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear for a glory and a covering, showing that the Lord in near. Thus deriving from their banner light by night and shade by day, safe they feed upon the manna which God gives them when they pray. 3 See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters and all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river ever flows, their thirst to assuage? Grace, so like the Lord the giver, never fails from age to age.

Prayer of Confession

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and one another.

God of grace, love, and communion,

I confess that I have often failed

to love you with all my heart, soul, and mind;

and to love my neighbor as myself.

I have often ignored your commandments,

strayed from your way,

and followed other gods;

through my fault, through my fault,

through my most grievous fault.

Have mercy on us.

Forgive our sin and raise us to new life

that we may serve you faithfully

and give honor to your holy name.

(silence)

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you pardon, forgiveness and remission of all your sins;

in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Alleluia.

*The Gloria Patri # 581

Prayer for Illumination

Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my ears; illumine me, Spirit divine!

First Lesson Exodus 1:1:8-2:10

8 Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9 He said to his people, “Look, the Israelite people are more numerous and more powerful than we. 10 Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, or they will increase and, in the event of war, join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to oppress them with forced labor. They built supply cities, Pithom and Rameses, for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread, so that the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites. 13 The Egyptians became ruthless in imposing tasks on the Israelites, 14 and made their lives bitter with hard service in mortar and brick and in every kind of field labor. They were ruthless in all the tasks that they imposed on them.

15 The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 16 “When you act as midwives to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstool, if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, she shall live.” 17 But the midwives feared God; they did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but they let the boys live. 18 So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and allowed the boys to live?” 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” 20 So God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied and became very strong. 21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every boy that is born to the Hebrews[a] you shall throw into the Nile, but you shall let every girl live.”

2 Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a Levite woman. 2 The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was a fine baby, she hid him three months. 3 When she could hide him no longer she got a papyrus basket for him, and plastered it with bitumen and pitch; she put the child in it and placed it among the reeds on the bank of the river. 4 His sister stood at a distance, to see what would happen to him.

5 The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her attendants walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid to bring it. 6 When she opened it, she saw the child. He was crying, and she took pity on him. “This must be one of the Hebrews’ children,” she said. 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” 8 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Yes.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child and nurse it for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed it. 10 When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and she took him as her son. She named him Moses, “because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Psalter Psalm 124 # 330

1 Our help is in the name of God the Lord, the One who made the heavens with a word, creator of the world, each living thing. Come, bless the Lord, lift up your hearts and sing: “Our help is in the name of God the Lord.” 2 When evil seems to have the upper hand, call on God’s name: the Lord, the great “I am.” When troubles rise and all around gives way, remember God stays with us night and day. Our help is in the name of God the Lord. 3 Praise God the Lord who hears the captives’ prayer. Like birds escaping from the fowler’s snare we are set free; our praises now ascend: “Blessed be the Lord: Creator, Savior, Friend. Our help is in the name of God the Lord.”

Second Lesson Romans 12:1-8

12 I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.

3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, 5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. 6 We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; 7 ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; 8 the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

*Alleluia # 175, vs. 1

Seek ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness,

and all these things shall be added unto you. Allelu, alleluia!

*Gospel Matthew 16:13-22

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon “Joy in the Presence of the Lord”

* The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty;

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit

and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord,

the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayer of Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is truly right and our greatest joy

to give you thanks and praise,

eternal God, creator and ruler of the universe.

At your word the earth was made

and spun on its course among the planets.

Your hand formed us from the dust of the earth

and set us among all your creatures

to love and serve you.

When we were unfaithful to you

you kept faith with us,

your love remained steadfast.

When we were slaves in Egypt,

you broke the bonds of our oppression,

brought us through the sea to freedom,

and made covenant to be our God.

By a pillar of fire

you led us through the desert

to a land flowing with milk and honey,

and set before us the way of life.

You spoke of love and justice in the prophets,

and in the Word made flesh you lived among us,

manifesting your glory.

He died that we might live,

and is risen to raise us to new life.

Therefore we praise you,

joining our voices with angels and archangels

and with all the faithful of every time and place,

who forever sing to the glory of your name:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full, full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

You are holy, O God of majesty,

and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord,

whom you sent to save us.

He came with healing in his touch,

and was wounded for our sins.

He came with mercy in his voice,

and was mocked as one despised.

He came with peace in his heart,

and met with violence and death.

By your power he broke free from the prison of the tomb,

and at his command the gates of hell were opened.

The one who was dead now lives.

The one who humbled himself is raised to rule over all creation, the Lamb upon the throne.

The one ascended on high is with us always, as he promised.

Great is the mystery of faith:

Christ has died,

Christ is risen,

Christ will come again.

Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us

and upon these your gifts of bread and wine,

that the bread we break and the cup we bless

may be the communion of the body and blood of Christ.

By your Spirit make us one with Christ

that we may be one with all who share this feast,

united in ministry in every place. As this bread is Christ’s body for us, send us out to be the body of Christ in the world.

We give you thanks that the Lord Jesus,

on the night before he died,

took bread, and after giving thanks to you,

he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take, eat. This is my body, given for you.

Do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way he took the cup, saying:

This cup is the new covenant sealed in my blood,

shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.

Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.

Remembering all your mighty and merciful acts,

we take this bread and this wine from the gifts you have given us, and celebrate with joy the redemption won for us in Jesus Christ. Accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving as a living and holy offering of ourselves,

that our lives may proclaim the One crucified and risen.

Nourished at this table, O God, may we know Christ’s redemptive love and live a new life in him.

Help us who recognize our Lord in the breaking of bread

to see and serve him in all whose lives are broken.

Give us who are fed at his hand, grace to share our bread with the hungry and with the hungry of heart.

Keep us faithful in your service until Christ comes in final victory, and we shall feast with all your saints in the joy of your eternal realm. Through Christ, all glory and honor are yours, almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit in the holy church, now and forever.

Prayer after Communion:

For the bread which you have broken,

for the wine which you have poured,

for the words which you have spoken,

now we give you thanks, O Lord.

The Lord’s Prayer (debts/debtors)

Our father which art in heaven Hallowed be Thy name Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done On earth As it is in heaven

Give us this day our daily bread And forgive us our debts As we forgive our debtors and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom, And the power And the glory forever and ever. Amen

Announcements

Prayer for the People # 794 vs. 1

O Savior, in this quiet place, where anyone may kneel,

I also come to ask for grace, believing you can heal.
.. through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sometimes, O God, we conceive of you only as regal,

powerful, and perhaps a little distant from us and our lives.

We think your sovereign rule involves mostly quashing evil, pursuing

justice, and judging sin. We ask that you remind us by your Spirit

that you are always close to us and people everywhere that are in need.

Help us to remember that in your kingdom those who serve are raised up

and that the hands that uphold our world are the pierced and tender hands of Jesus. Never let us forget that you see not only the evil of this world but also the suffering.

You, O Lord, see the tears of the widowed, the sobs that overtake them when the rest of us are not looking.

You see the disorientation in which so many people live every day— confusion borne of war, poverty, abuse, or chronic illness. You see the people in dead-end jobs who trudge to work every day filled with so much despair that they can hardly breathe. You see those who search a loved one’s eyes for traces of love but find only an empty stare. As Lord of the earth, you see every instance of one person cutting another to the quick, every place where a child lives in fear, every bar where someone tries to drown their sorrows. Yet you are our world’s every hope. You are tender enough to weep with those who

weep and yet strong enough to lend comfort and not be consumed with the sorrows that overwhelm us. You are discerning enough to see where our lives run off the rails and yet gracious enough to forgive our foolishness and open again the

better path that leads into your kingdom. You gracious God are the bright center to all of life.

With your mercy, we ask that you allow us to also see and administer to those in needs and we ask that you hear the prayers of this church family, both those spoken and those offered in silence from their hearts…..

O God of grace, Make us your hands of mercy, your voice of grace, your presence of love. Whatever we do, whether in word or deed; whatever we see, whether sinful or salacious; whatever we hear, whether uplifting or depressing; whatever we face in this world, help us to face it in your power and with the knowledge of your grace and goodness. All this we ask in the name of our Savior and Lord. AMEN!

Offering

From generation to generation, we tell the story of the people of Israel long ago, held captive and threatened by Pharaoh. Yet God blessed them with an abundance of children, including the great Moses who would one day lead them to freedom. First, however, two nameless women worked courageously with God to protect those babies from Pharaoh’s command. God provides in every age, in every generation, and in our own day we give back a portion of what God has given

us so that we might work with God through the ministry of this church. Let us gather our gifts together

and offer them to God in gratitude and praise.

*Hymn Our God, Our Help in Ages Past # 687

1 Our God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home: 2 Beneath the shadow of thy throne thy saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defense is sure. 3 Before the hills in order stood, or earth received its frame, from everlasting thou art God, to endless years the same. 4 A thousand ages in thy sight are like an evening gone, short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun. 5 Time, like an ever rolling stream, bears all our years away; they fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day. 6 Our God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be thou our guard while life shall last, and our eternal home.

Charge & Blessing

May the beauty of God be reflected in your eyes, the love of God be reflected in your hands, the wisdom of God be reflected in your words, and the knowledge of God flow from your heart, that all might see, and seeing, believe.

And may the blessings of the Triune God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit

be with you and remain in your hearts

now and evermore. AMEN.

FIRST READING

A reading from Genesis 37:1–28

(Out of jealousy, Joseph’s brothers sell him into slavery in Egypt.)

37 Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.

2 This is the account of Jacob’s family line.

Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.

3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.

5 Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”

8 His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.

9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”

10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

Joseph Sold by His Brothers

12 Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem, 13 and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.”

“Very well,” he replied.

14 So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron.

When Joseph arrived at Shechem, 15 a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?”

16 He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?”

17 “They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’”

So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. 18 But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.

19 “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”

21 When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said. 22 “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.

23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.

25 As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.

26 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? 27 Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed.

28 So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels[b] of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

Word of the Lord.

THE PSALTER Psalm 105:1–6, 16–22, 45b

(God sent Joseph to Egypt to save the people in a time of famine.)

1 Give praise to the LORD, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done. 2 Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. 3 Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. 4 Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.

5 Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced, 6 you his servants, the descendants of Abraham, his chosen ones, the children of Jacob.

16 He called down famine on the land and destroyed all their supplies of food; 17 and he sent a man before them— Joseph, sold as a slave. 18 They bruised his feet with shackles, his neck was put in irons, 19 till what he foretold came to pass, till the word of the LORD proved him true.

20 The king sent and released him, the ruler of peoples set him free. 21 He made him master of his household, ruler over all he possessed, 22 to instruct his princes as he pleased and teach his elders wisdom.

Praise the LORD.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

SECOND READING

A reading from Romans 10:5–15

(Proclaim the word of faith: confess Jesus as Lord, and be saved.)

Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.” 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are

the feet of those who bring good news!”.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING

Gospel Acclamation (Tune: “Amazing Grace”)

Hear now the Gospel of the Lord! The Lord our Christ adore!

He is the Way, the Truth, the Life, The King forever more!

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew, chapter 14, verses 22 through 33.

Glory to you, Lord Christ.

(Jesus walks on the water to meet his disciples, and calms a storm.)

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat

worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Praise to you, Lord Christ

“The Book of Psalms and Human Suffering”

Text: Psalm 1

NICENE CREED

Let us confess the faith of the one holy, catholic (universal), and apostolic Church.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living

and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE HOLY EUCHARIST

INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE

Friends, this is the joyful feast of the people of God!

They will come from east and west, and from north and south,

and sit at table in the kingdom of God.

According to Luke, when our risen Lord was at table with his disciples,

he took the bread, and blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.

Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him.

This is the Lord’s table.

Our Savior invites those who trust him to share the feast which he has prepared.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Eternal God, holy and mighty, it is truly right and our greatest joy to give you

thanks and praise, and to worship you in every place where your glory abides.

You commanded light to shine out of darkness, divided the sea and dry land, created the vast universe and called it good. You made us in your image to live with one another in love. You gave us the breath of life and freedom to choose your way. You promised yourself in covenant with Abraham and Sarah, told us your purpose in commandments through Moses, and called for justice in the cry of prophets. Through long generations you have been faithful and kind to all your

children.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. You sent your only-begotten, in whom your fullness dwells, to be for us the way, the truth, and the life. Revealing your love, Jesus taught those who would hear him, healed those who believed in him, received all who sought him and lifted the burden of their sin. We glorify you for your great power and love at work in Christ. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection, you gave birth to your church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made us a new people by

water and the Spirit.

(Lift up your communion cups)

Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these your gifts of bread and wine, that the bread we break and the cup we bless may be the communion of the body and blood of Christ. By your Spirit unite us with the living Christ and with all who are baptized in his name, that we may be one in ministry in every place. As this bread is Christ’s body for us, send us out to be the body of

Christ in the world.

We give you thanks that the Lord Jesus, on the night before he died, took bread, and after giving thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat. This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way he took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant sealed in my blood, shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this n

remembrance of me.

Remembering all your mighty and merciful acts,

we take this bread and this wine from the gifts you have given us, and celebrate with joy the redemption won for us in Jesus Christ. Accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving as a living and holy offering of ourselves, that our lives may proclaim the One crucified and risen.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Intercessions for the church and the world may be included here…

Help us, O God, to love as Christ loved. Knowing our own weakness, may we stand with all who stumble. Sharing in his suffering,

may we remember all who suffer. Held in his love, may we embrace all whom the world denies. Rejoicing in his forgiveness, may we forgive all who sin against us. Give us strength to serve you faithfully until the promised day of resurrection, when with the redeemed of all the ages we will feast with you at your table in

glory. Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all

glory and honor are yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

As our Savior Christ has taught us to pray, so we are bold to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us;

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

Forever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia! Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us, let us keep the feast.

Aleluia!

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Loving God, we thank you that you have fed us in this Sacrament, united us with Christ, and given us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet in your eternal kingdom. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
