Good morning every one (it’s still a few minutes before noon)! I am also aware that spring break officially started when schools let out yesterday and I hope you all will find peace, fun, laughter, and lot of activities to keep you busy.
But, and this is a big but, we’ll experience two days of worship during this school break and hopefully it will be at the top of your priorities: WORSHIP!

Yes, a time to gather together as the Body of Christ in Worship, Prayer, Adoration, Songs and Hymns and Spiritual hymns. For those of you who have not graced us with your presence, know that we have truly missed you and have kept you lifted in prayer, for whatever reason you weren’t with us.

But life at Dycusburg continues, “Come Holy Spirit Come, Come and Fill The Hearts of Your Faithful.” We’re not high church by any means but we revere the Holy traditions of the church eternal. Won’t you please consider rejoining us tomorrow and again the first Sunday in April when we will celebrate Holy Communion together.

Hope to see all of you in the morning. Be blessed!
Bro. Phil

Hello Friends and Neighbors, Brothers and Sisters,

Come join us tomorrow morning for something special. If you’ve ever attended a reading promotion day at one of the elementary schools you know they always have someone read from Dr. Seuss, in character! If you want to see your pastor “in character,” i.e., wearing the Dr. Seuss hat while I read “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish,” then come and bring your kids and grandkids, your neighbor’s kids and anyone else you can find! We will explore and celebrate diversity in the church as we discover what being a Christian really means.

As always, services start at 10:00AM. Let’s show the kids that church can be fun and you will enjoy it too!

Blessings to all!

Bro. Phil

I said I was going to wait until 8am to make a decision, but conditions have deteriorated to the point we will cancel services tomorrow, Jan. 20th. If you don’t have to get out, please stay in, and keep safe and warm. If you need me please call my cell, 270-365-6599!
God bless you all!

Hello everyone! This Sunday, the third Sunday in Advent, is a really special day in the life of Dycusburg UMC. We will light the third Advent candle with a special reading, and at the conclusion of my message, “Breaking News” from Mark 1: 1-8, we will gather at the table together to celebrate Holy Communion. John Wesley, when asked about celebrating communion, said to do it as often as you can. And our folks came to me last week and asked if we can celebrate communion these next two Sundays that lead up to Christmas. That made my heart leap with Joy!

Following communion we will gather in the basement for a Christmas luncheon and time of fellowship. Afterward, we will go back up to the Christmas tree in the sanctuary and have our annual gift exchange. There will be gifts for each child. And we are all asked to bring a gift according to whether you are a man or a woman (each man bring one man’s gift; each woman brings one woman’s gift: limit $10 or so). As far as food goes, there will be plenty! Come and enjoy this special time together in a good, old fashioned way!

Come, and be blessed! Merry Christmas!!!!

Hi everyone, tomorrow is a very special day in America, a day set aside to recognize the veterans who have served our country. All sacrificed something; some sacrificed all. If not your spouse, than perhaps a sibling or parent or grandparent. Maybe a neighbor or co-worker, or maybe a new friend you just met at the checkout line at the grocery or McDonalds. Do more than thank him or her for their service. Show them your thanks by inviting them to join you (better yet, bring them with you!)

What better way to live out our UMC Mission: make someone a disciple of Jesus for the transformation of the world.

May The Lord Bless you all. See you tomorrow!

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is Wednesday, and tonight we will hold our weekly prayer service. Prayer service, not a preaching service or a teaching time, but a time when we take praises, and thanks and petitions to the throne of God Himself. We’ve been doing this now for something like going on three months. We changed the day from Tuesday to Wednesday so accommodate one member’s commitment to coaching his daughters in soccer and softball; and we changed the time from 7PM to 6PM so our older members could get home a little earlier. But the format remains the same. We open by inviting the presence of the Holy Spirit by saying, “Come Holy Spirit, come and fill the hearts of your people.” It’s from the Prayer to the Holy Spirit that some of us learned on our Walk to Emmaus (and will never forget!) And we have seen prayer requests answered. God is Faithful, and God is wise. He answers in His time and in His own wisdom. Praise be to God.

And speaking of Wisdom, last week I preached on Make Christianity Weird Again. You would have had to have been there to get it, but I used an OT passage from Proverbs 1, and a NT passage from James 3, and in my benediction I urged my folks to go out and be weird this week. As I said, you had to be there.

In two weeks, October 7, at 11AM, we will join with our brothers and sisters at the other two Methodist churches in Crittenden County to celebrate World Communion Sunday on the river near Tulu as has become our custom. We will sing and praise Jesus, take Holy Communion, hear a message and even have an infant baptism. A great covered dish meal will follow with a time of fellowship with old friends.

And then two weeks later Dycusburg UMC will celebrate our 163rd Homecoming with a message by former pastor, Rev. Jesse Johnson and special music and a great meal to follow. Not many churches can claim a continual history of 163 years but God has been and continues to bless us.

And finally, if you have been through adversity recently, you’ll want to hear my message this Sunday as I preach on: “Joseph, Faithful through Adversity.” I’m already praying that folks will think of and invite friends who need a lift spiritually to bring them through it all one more time. How about you?

May The Lord continue to richly bless you through your life’s journey, strengthen you through the hard times and love you always!

Won’t you come and join us this Sunday. The Holy Spirit has led me to preach on “IT’S TOO SOON TO QUIT: WE NEED TO ADD TO OUR FAITH… PERSEVERANCE! The focal passage of
Scripture is from 2 PT 1:5-6. But we will examine the whole context of 2 Peter 1 from verse 3 to verse 9 as Kay Arthur taught me a long time ago. If you have a text, out of context, look forward and look backward to get the whole meaning. This time it’s on “Confirming One’s Calling and Election.” (NIV). It’s meant to encourage you to keep on keeping on and not to let obstacles discourage you, and to keep you from becoming a quitter.

And speaking of discouragement and quitting, bring your needs to God under the power of The Holy Spirit in a group setting every Tuesday evening in Dycusburg UMC’s sanctuary at our weekly prayer meeting. No preaching and no teaching. Just God in the person of The Holy Spirit. He’s all we need. Pray silently, or pray out loud, as The Spirit leads. If you need a friend to talk to and/or to pray with you, one of us will gladly go with you to the altar, or to a private pew. Dress is casual and comfortable. All are welcome!

Have you invited someone to church recently. One member did last week with a lady she ran into on Saturday night. The lady came, and brought her son with her. Our member was just being obedient, and she had nothing to fear. Try it for yourself this week.

Okay, that about wraps things up for now. Have a safe and fun Saturday and know we look forward to seeing you again Sunday.

Blessings,

Bro. Phil

Wow, this is so cool. Welcome to all new folks who joined our Facebook family last week. I promise to always leave you with something to ponder and please know if you’re going to be in Western KY on a weekend we would love to have you drop by at 10AM and worship with us. And, of course, we covet your on-going prayers as well. And that goes both ways. If you have a prayer request you can either post it or PM me and I will bring it to our congregation on Sunday as well as our weekly prayer meeting on Tuesday evenings at 7PM. So, once again, welcome to our virtual family.

My message this first Sunday in August is “The Presence of Jesus,” based on John 20:19-29. What happens when Jesus is in the midst of His disciples? If we allow Jesus to come into our midst, we shall be filled with peace, joy, His Spirit, forgiveness and invited to the adventures of a life time. Of course there is much more but you’ll have to be there to hear it!

And finally, last week we had a dinner to recognize our students returning to school and this week (again the first Sunday of the month) we come together to celebrate Holy Communion. The Table of The Lord is open... won’t you come and dine with Him and with us?

Blessings,
Bro. Phil

To all of our followers, our weekly prayer meeting (and by that we mean a time in sincere prayer, calling out to The Lord, without teaching or preaching). This will be our 4th Tuesday night meeting and already we are seeing answers to prayers. The meeting lasts about an hour. Won’t you come join us this evening?

Beloved, I’m sitting here on Thursday morning, my coffee—poured into my cup over a half hour ago—is cooling rapidly (and if you know me you know I like my coffee really hot and black). Why have I neglected my coffee you ask? Simply because I have been praying through my various daily devotionals in preparation for the day ahead; and doing a read-through of my message for Sunday. I am excited about this Sunday. It centers around a familiar answer from folks these days to the question, “What is truth?” Sadly, most folks today say there is NO ABSOLUTE TRUTH. Do whatever you want, in whatever way feels right to you. There are no consequences. And if you ask on whose authority they have come to that conclusion, they will simply say, “because...” If you find yourself in that boat, may I invite you to sit in on our service this Sunday where I will preach on, “Is the Bible Your Authority? If we live under the authority of God’s Word, the answers to every one of life’s questions are there to guide us, and guide us faithfully.

Another reason to visit this Sunday is we are having a send-off dinner for our kids who are all returning to school very soon. That’s right, our ladies, some of the best cooks in western KY, will be bringing chicken and ham, baked beans and potato salad, rolls and much more. And did I say desserts?

And like good Wesleyans everywhere we believe the Table of the Lord is open to all so please come and dine with us Sunday. The worship service starts at 10:00AM and the dinner will follow. If you are not familiar with Dycusburg, our church is the one at the top of the hill. So come one come all.
We’ll be waiting for you with open arms and open hearts.
Blessings,

Bro. Phil (and now I’ve got to go warm up my coffee!)
