Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is Wednesday, and tonight we will hold our weekly prayer service. Prayer service, not a preaching service or a teaching time, but a time when we take praises, and thanks and petitions to the throne of God Himself. We’ve been doing this now for something like going on three months. We changed the day from Tuesday to Wednesday so accommodate one member’s commitment to coaching his daughters in soccer and softball; and we changed the time from 7PM to 6PM so our older members could get home a little earlier. But the format remains the same. We open by inviting the presence of the Holy Spirit by saying, “Come Holy Spirit, come and fill the hearts of your people.” It’s from the Prayer to the Holy Spirit that some of us learned on our Walk to Emmaus (and will never forget!) And we have seen prayer requests answered. God is Faithful, and God is wise. He answers in His time and in His own wisdom. Praise be to God.
And speaking of Wisdom, last week I preached on Make Christianity Weird Again. You would have had to have been there to get it, but I used an OT passage from Proverbs 1, and a NT passage from James 3, and in my benediction I urged my folks to go out and be weird this week. As I said, you had to be there.
In two weeks, October 7, at 11AM, we will join with our brothers and sisters at the other two Methodist churches in Crittenden County to celebrate World Communion Sunday on the river near Tulu as has become our custom. We will sing and praise Jesus, take Holy Communion, hear a message and even have an infant baptism. A great covered dish meal will follow with a time of fellowship with old friends.
And then two weeks later Dycusburg UMC will celebrate our 163rd Homecoming with a message by former pastor, Rev. Jesse Johnson and special music and a great meal to follow. Not many churches can claim a continual history of 163 years but God has been and continues to bless us.
And finally, if you have been through adversity recently, you’ll want to hear my message this Sunday as I preach on: “Joseph, Faithful through Adversity.” I’m already praying that folks will think of and invite friends who need a lift spiritually to bring them through it all one more time. How about you?
May The Lord continue to richly bless you through your life’s journey, strengthen you through the hard times and love you always!
Bro. Phil
