Duxbury area folks came to Pilgrim Church today for its annual Rally Sunday worship and gathering — the traditional start of the new school year. In addition to a blessing of the backpacks, congregants heard about the importance of being forgiven. Following the service, an ice cream social was held in the church’s fellowship hall, giving folks of all ages special time for treats and conversation. (Photos by Dwight and Lucy Shepard)

Today was Rally Sunday at Pilgrim Church, the traditional start of the Church School year. Rev. Bill Ferguson talked to children about listening -- among other things -- and preached to the congregation on "Learning to Live Forgiven." This is a recording of the 10 a.m. worship service on Sept. 13, 2026. The service was followed by an ice cream social in fellowship hall.

25 years ago, Maureen and I and our sons had just moved to Hampstead NH to serve at the Hampstead Congregational Church UCC. The boys were sent off to school for the first day of High School and I sat down in the kitchen anticipating starting work on September 12 with a new congregation. And the world changed. I will never forget meeting my new church members and town’s people at a service that night. I learoso much about the comfort and necessity of community and those lessons have stayed with me. We remember and we grieve and we grow in the process. We remember today and our faith, to whichever peaceful deity we pray to, that we do not stand alone in grief and we grow in relationships. Let us remember with love all those who died, the first responders and families and our country today and grow in our remembrances.

Bring your BACKPACKS for our BLESSING of the BACKPACKS during the Time for All Ages!

We'll have our first Sunday School class of the school year - be prepared to go outside for part of it!

Nursery care will be available for our toddlers and pre-k children!

J's Ice Cream Truck will be in the parking lot after church for FREE ICE CREAM!!

Can't wait to get together again!

We have a lot of Chores that Need YOU!
1. Order and Pick up C***r Doughnuts’!
2. Prepare Bags of Popcorn!
3. Pick up Apple C***r!
4. Help with the Apple Pie Contest!
5. Assist in Set-up and Break down!
6. Decorate with Hay Bales, Mums, Corn Stalks for Front Lawn.
7. Donate treats and goodies!
