Many are wondering what happened to our organ at St. Basil's. Here's what you need to know.
* In 2021 we had a lightning strike damage the sound system and organ at St. Basil's.
*We don't have a pipe organ. The organ sounds are generated from a large computer inside the organ console and sent to 12 amplifiers and 24 speaker cabinets placed around the church.
*An insurance claim wasn’t filed in a timely manner and the statute of limitations passed.
*Lighting damage to a computerized organ such as ours makes the organ completely dead, or causes a slow-burn failure of electronic parts over time. Ours is the slow-burn failure.
*A lightning strike with slow-burn failure is the equivalent to cancer in humans. It grows and grows until it no longer functions. There is no cure for electronics.
*What exactly happens? The organ computer completely shuts down at unpredictable times and blows the circuit breaker in the sacristy electric panel at the same time. Other times various functions of the organ cease to work unexpectedly during mass.
*The organ sounds fine when Jeff plays it for mass... what could possibly be wrong? Jeff is VERY good at playing the organ and covering up all of the issues. He tries his best to work with the problems so mass doesn't get disturbed for our congregation.
*We've had technicians from Rodgers Organ company look at the organ numerous times over the last five years. We're at the end of our rope.
*Organs are a specialty item. They aren't assembly-line built like cars, they're custom built for each church and must be large enough to fill the church with a singing congregation like ours. Allen Organ Company has matched our current organ and will be almost an exact replacement for what we currently have. None of the parts or wiring of the current instrument can be used on the new one - it voids the warranty. That is why the replacement is so expensive.
*Our goal is $250,000
